UgandaToday: Sebamala Bets UGX 100M If Mao Contests in 2026 Elections
Kampala, Uganda – Bukoto Central MP Richard Sebamala has staked UGX 100 million with his unwavering belief that Democratic Party (DP) President General Norbert Mao will not appear on the 2026 presidential ballot.
Sebamala, a long-time critic of Mao, says the DP leader’s position as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in President Yoweri Museveni’s government makes it difficult for him to mount a credible presidential bid.
“It is not easy to serve in cabinet and at the same time prepare to contest against the same government. If Mao intends to run, then he would need to step aside,” Sebamala told supporters.
He urged DP members to reflect on the party’s future direction, stressing the importance of maintaining independence from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Sebamala’s wager has generated debate among political observers, with some viewing it as a strategic move to mobilize anti-Mao factions within the DP ahead of 2026.
As of now, Mao has not responded publicly to Sebamala’s remarks.
The development highlights growing discussion within the DP over its identity and role in Uganda’s political landscape as the country moves closer to the next general elections.
Mao’s absence on the presidential ballot, leaves the oldest political party in the country (DP) in a vacuum of not fielding a candidate.
