Wouldn’t A Week to Remember National Police Be A Good Idea?

It would also be an opportunity to educate, connect, and inspire Ugandans by deepening understanding of the police’s role in maintaining a secure, stable, and orderly society.

Uganda Today: A Week to Remember National Police

This proposed Remembrance Week would be more than just a ceremonial gesture. It would be an active, engaging week filled with events that showcase the work of the Uganda Police Force and demonstrate how deeply it values its members.

Wall of fame proposed

Planned activities could include:

  • Parades and Unit Demonstrations: Public displays by various police units

  • Canine Unit Showcases: Insight into how police dogs are trained and used in investigations

  • Counter Terrorism Engagements: Public awareness sessions with specialized units

  • Traffic Safety Clinics: Community sessions on road safety and regulations

  • Community Policing Forums: Building trust between the public and police

  • Police Band Performances: Musical tributes to fallen heroes

  • Photo and Story Exhibitions: Documenting the lives and contributions of deceased officers

These events would foster public appreciation and provide families and communities with a chance to celebrate the courage and commitment of those who serve.

More Than a Job, It’s a Brotherhood

The Remembrance Week should also serve as a reunion and reflection period for both serving and retired officers. Many retired personnel carry valuable institutional knowledge and a deep connection to the service. Honoring them as continuing assets would reinforce unity and pride within the police fraternity.

A National Recognition for National Sacrifice

In the long term, this initiative could evolve into an official national day of remembrance—a public holiday where Uganda pauses to remember officers who paid the ultimate price to protect life and property.

It would also be an opportunity to educate, connect, and inspire Ugandans by deepening understanding of the police’s role in maintaining a secure, stable, and orderly society.

A Call to Action

I call upon the Commander-in-Chief, the Parliament of Uganda, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Inspector General of Police, and the entire police leadership and rank-and-file to support this idea.

Let us start the conversation. Let us institutionalize remembrance. Let us create a legacy of gratitude.

Let us honor the heroes who never came home. Let us stand with those who still serve.

In loving memory, their light shines on.
