Legendary Ugandan Footballer Baker Kasigwa Passes Away at 91

Sad news has struck Uganda’s football fraternity following the passing of Mzee Baker Kasigwa, a football legend whose name is etched in the annals of the nation’s sporting history. Kasigwa, 91, breathed his last this afternoon, January 11, 2025, in Hoima District.

Kasigwa was the only surviving member of the historic 1956 Uganda national football team that toured England, a milestone that marked Uganda’s early foray onto the international football stage. Known for his unparalleled skill and sportsmanship, he also represented Uganda in the 1962 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament held in Ethiopia, the country’s debut appearance in Africa’s premier football competition.

After retiring from active play, Kasigwa continued to shape Ugandan football as a coach, mentoring players at Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB) and Lint football clubs. His dedication to nurturing young talent cemented his legacy as a pillar of the sport in Uganda.

Football enthusiasts and historians remember Kasigwa as an exemplary athlete whose discipline and passion for football were unmatched. His role in promoting Uganda’s footballing identity both locally and internationally cannot be overstated.
