Uganda Today Edition: The Folklore of Truth and Lie: A Tale of Deception

In the land of Moralonia, where virtues and vices walked the earth as living beings, there lived two individuals who were inseparable in appearance but distinct in character—Truth and Lie. Though they often crossed paths, their nature made them eternal rivals. Truth, with his steadfast honesty, was revered by the wise but shunned by many. Lie, with his silver tongue and charming ways, was loved by the masses who found his stories easier to digest.

One bright morning, Lie approached Truth with a gleam in his eye and a plan in his heart. “My dear friend,” Lie said, his voice as smooth as a still pond, “have you ever considered the health benefits of a refreshing swim? The waters at the Pool of Reflection are said to be enchanted, capable of cleansing both body and soul. What say you to a dip in these magical waters?”

Truth, always open to new experiences, nodded in agreement. He believed that a swim would indeed be refreshing, especially in the heat of the day. Together, they made their way to the Pool of Reflection, a serene and secluded spot where the waters shimmered with a mystical glow.

Upon reaching the pool, Lie was the first to strip off his clothes, revealing a physique that appeared strong and robust, though his heart was full of guile. “Come, Truth,” Lie beckoned as he dived gracefully into the water, “Join me! The water is perfect.”

Truth hesitated for a moment, but the allure of the cool water was too much to resist. He carefully removed his clothes, folding them neatly by the pool’s edge, and then dived in after Lie. The water was indeed refreshing, and for a brief moment, Truth felt at peace.

But as Truth began to swim, Lie’s true intentions surfaced. While Truth was immersed in the water, Lie quickly swam to the edge, climbed out, and snatched up Truth’s clothes. In their place, he left his own tattered garments, then hurried away, draped in Truth’s attire.

Now clothed in the guise of Truth, Lie walked through the streets of Moralonia, where people marveled at his appearance. He was welcomed wherever he went, his words taken as gospel, for the people believed they were hearing the voice of Truth. But little did they know, they were being deceived by the cunning Lie.

Meanwhile, when Truth emerged from the pool, he was greeted by an unsettling sight. His clothes were gone, and in their place lay Lie’s ragged garments. Realizing what had happened, Truth had no choice but to wear the tattered clothes and set off in search of his deceitful friend.

As Truth walked through the towns and villages, he was met with scorn and ridicule. People turned away from him, unwilling to listen to his words or even look upon his face. “Who is this wretched figure?” they whispered. “This cannot be Truth! Truth is noble and well-dressed, not this pitiful sight.”

Yet Truth continued his journey, undeterred by the harsh words and cold shoulders. He knew that his appearance mattered little, for his essence was unchanging. But the more he sought to reveal himself, the more people rejected him, preferring the comforting lies over the stark reality of his presence.

Lie, on the other hand, basked in his newfound popularity. Clad in the clothes of Truth, he spread his deceptions far and wide, each one more believable than the last. The people adored him, never questioning the validity of his words because they were blinded by the image he portrayed.

But as time went on, the lies began to unravel. The people who had once revered Lie in Truth’s clothing started to feel the weight of their own ignorance. The consequences of believing in falsehoods became evident as their society crumbled under the weight of deceit.

And so, the moral of the story spread through the land like wildfire: Humanity often clings to lies that are dressed as truth, shunning the naked truth that stands before them. For in the end, it is easier to accept the comfortable lies than to face the harshness of reality.

But Truth, though often shunned and scorned, remains unyielding. For while Lie may wear the clothes of Truth, the essence of Truth cannot be altered, and in time, the naked Truth will always come to light.
