Uganda Today Edition: Wave of Violent Night Attacks in Kampala: Residents in Fear as Criminal Gangs Target Homes
Kampala, Uganda – The escalating wave of house break-ins and night street raids in Kampala and its suburbs has left residents living in fear, as criminal gangs not only rob victims but also inflict serious injuries. The latest victim of this rising crime is former Makerere University ICT Director, Engineer Frank Kitumba, who is currently nursing severe wounds after being attacked at his home within Makerere University.
Attack on a Secured Institution Raises Alarm
Despite Makerere University having a dedicated police unit, assailants managed to storm Eng. Kitumba’s residence, inflicting grave injuries on him and vandalizing his property. Some of his belongings were also stolen during the attack. If criminals can boldly raid a residence within an institution as fortified as Makerere University, what does this mean for ordinary citizens with little to no security?
This incident adds to a growing list of similar attacks in Kyebando, Kisaasi, Kawempe, Nansana, and Kireka, where victims are beaten and left with life-threatening injuries, even after surrendering their possessions to the criminals.
Residents Decry Police Inaction
Many residents have voiced concerns over the slow response by law enforcement, despite increased reports of night-time robberies. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson has previously assured the public of enhanced security operations, but many believe more needs to be done to dismantle these criminal networks.
“The security situation is worsening every night. People are being robbed in their homes, on the streets, and even inside gated communities. We need urgent intervention from security agencies,” said one resident of Najjera, a hotspot for recent attacks.
Call for Government Action
With Kampala’s streets growing more dangerous, there is mounting pressure on the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies to step up patrols, improve street lighting, and deploy more surveillance teams. Residents are also urged to remain vigilant, avoid walking alone at night, and enhance personal security measures.
As security concerns mount, the government must act swiftly to restore safety, or risk a surge in public discontent over what many see as a failure to protect citizens from lawlessness.
