Uganda Today Edition: Veteran Journalist Blasts URSB Over Absurd Name Registration Block

Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) is once again under fire, this time from a veteran journalist who has raised the alarm over what he describes as “ridiculous and dangerous” bureaucratic practices stifling entrepreneurship in the country.

For the past two weeks, the journalist — Harry Sagara — has been battling URSB to reserve the company name Chicken Republic Limited under Tracking Number G250423-3983. However, to his dismay, the application was queried — not because the name clashes with any existing company, but because URSB officials allegedly feel “uncomfortable” with the use of the word Republic.

“How ridiculous can this get?” the journalist asked in a scathing statement shared with Uganda Today. He pointed out that URSB has previously approved and registered several companies bearing the word Republic in their names, including Space Republic Limited, Design Republic Limited, Coffee Republic Limited, and Brand Republic Limited, among others.

“But now, suddenly, Chicken Republic Limited is a threat?” he questioned.

The journalist accused URSB, under the leadership of Registrar General Mercy Kainobwisho and Director of Business Registration Patricia Opoka, of operating out of fear instead of logic. “This is what happens when public institutions are run by fear instead of reason,” he said. “Instead of helping Ugandans create businesses, jobs, and tax revenue, URSB seems more worried about imaginary threats from chicken sellers.”

According to the journalist, the intent behind the name Chicken Republic Limited was purely commercial — to craft a catchy, memorable brand name for a restaurant business — not to stir political sentiment.

“This level of hypersensitivity is not only shameful but also dangerous for Uganda’s business environment. Entrepreneurs are being frustrated over pure nonsense, while the rest of the world moves forward,” he lamented.

He further urged URSB leadership to offer proper guidance to young registrars handling such cases, warning that the institution risks losing credibility if it continues to “look less like a professional bureau and more like a paranoid club worried about its own shadow.”

“Whether they approve it or not, we will still sell our chicken,” he said defiantly. “But it would be sad to see URSB continue being an obstacle instead of a facilitator of growth.”

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau has yet to issue a public statement regarding the matter.
