Uganda Today Edition: Uganda Electoral Commission Flags Off Voter Register Update Exercise
Kampala, Uganda – January 20, 2025
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has today officially launched the much-anticipated voter register update exercise, a critical step in preparation for the upcoming 2026 general elections. The exercise was flagged off by the Commission’s Chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, during a launch event held in Kampala.
In his address, Justice Byabakama emphasized the importance of the exercise, particularly for registered voters who wish to transfer to new voting locations. “During this update exercise, registered voters who wish to transfer to new voting locations will be able to apply for such transfers,” he stated.
He clarified the procedure for transferring voting locations, outlining specific requirements to ensure the integrity of the voter register:
- Residency Confirmation: Voters must present confirmation that they originate from, or are currently residing in, the parish of their desired new voting location at the time of their application.
- Previous Voting Details: Applicants must provide details of their previous voting location to facilitate the transfer process.
Justice Byabakama also highlighted that applicants can visit any designated update center equipped with a registration kit to submit their transfer requests.
“This is an opportunity for all eligible voters to ensure their information is accurate and up to date. We encourage the public to participate actively and responsibly in this exercise, as it lays the foundation for a credible electoral process,” he added.
The EC has deployed registration kits and personnel across various update centers nationwide to streamline the process. The Commission has urged voters to adhere to the set guidelines and make use of the update period to address any discrepancies in their voter information.
The voter register update exercise marks the beginning of several activities aimed at ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral process.
