The Board of Directors of Uganda Airlines has formally signaled the beginning of a leadership transition at the national carrier, following an internal communication announcing plans to advertise the position of Chief Executive Officer.

In an email addressed to Uganda Airlines staff, the current Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Jennifer Bamuturaki Musiime, informed employees that the Board will shortly advertise the CEO position and encouraged qualified internal staff to apply.

“The Board will advertise the position of Chief Executive Officer shortly, and you are all encouraged to apply if you meet the required qualifications. The job description and application form will be published on the website,” Ms. Bamuturaki wrote.

Although the airline has not yet issued a formal public statement confirming the end of Ms. Bamuturaki’s tenure, the communication strongly indicates that her contract is approaching completion, or that a structured succession process has been initiated in line with corporate governance practices.

A Transitional Moment for Uganda’s National Carrier

Ms. Bamuturaki has served as Uganda Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer during a period marked by both expansion and operational turbulence. Under her stewardship, the airline consolidated its regional footprint and maintained international routes, while navigating global aviation headwinds such as post-pandemic recovery pressures, aircraft maintenance challenges, and financing constraints.

Her tenure has coincided with increased government scrutiny over the airline’s financial sustainability, fleet utilization, route profitability, and long-term strategic direction.

The move to openly advertise the CEO position suggests that the Board is seeking to recalibrate leadership as Uganda Airlines enters its next phase of development.

Competitive Search Expected

Industry analysts anticipate that the forthcoming recruitment will attract both local and international aviation professionals, as Uganda seeks to strengthen the airline’s commercial viability and competitiveness within the increasingly crowded African aviation market.

Sources within the aviation sector indicate that the next CEO will be expected to:

  • Drive profitability and cost discipline

  • Strengthen corporate governance

  • Expand profitable routes and strategic partnerships

  • Improve fleet reliability and on-time performance

  • Enhance customer confidence in the national carrier

The Board’s decision to encourage internal candidates alongside external applicants reflects an attempt to balance institutional continuity with fresh strategic thinking.

Bamuturaki’s Legacy

Ms. Bamuturaki is widely regarded as one of the technocrats who helped stabilize Uganda Airlines after its relaunch, steering the carrier through early operational challenges and establishing its presence on continental and intercontinental routes.

As the recruitment process unfolds, attention will now shift to how the transition is managed, and whether Ms. Bamuturaki remains in office until a successor is appointed.

Uganda Airlines remains a strategic national asset, and the choice of its next Chief Executive Officer is expected to shape the carrier’s trajectory for years to come.
