UgandaToday: UEDCL Launches ‘Weterezeeee’ Amnesty for Illegal Power Consumers
Kampala, September 3, 2025 – The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has rolled out a sweeping amnesty campaign, urging consumers connected through illegal, tampered, or bypassed meters to come forward and formalise their power consumption—free of penalties or prosecution.
Dubbed the “Weterezeeee” campaign, the initiative opened on July 23, 2025, offering an amnesty window for affected individuals. During this period, consumers with irregular power supplies can register and regularise their connection at no cost, as UEDCL aims to improve safety, reduce revenue losses, and enhance overall service delivery .
Jonan Kiiza, UEDCL’s Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs, urged offenders to use this opportunity wisely:
“This is a chance for all those on illegal supply to normalize their connections. After September 30, enforcement will resume, and offenders will face the full force of the law.”
Why the Amnesty Matters
-
Revenue Recovery & Safety: Power theft and unsafe makeshift connections have long plagued the electricity sector, undermining revenue and endangering lives. UEDCL’s move aims to curb these damages.
-
Regulatory Enforcement: After the September 30, 2025 deadline, UEDCL will resume strict enforcement under the Electricity Act, with offenders facing disconnection, hefty fines, or even criminal prosecution
-
Operational Transition: This initiative comes amidst UEDCL’s ongoing transition since taking over electricity distribution from Umeme on April 1, 2025, under a broader agenda of enhancing accountability and service reliability

How to Participate
Consumers invited to formalise their connections can visit any UEDCL office, where the normalisation process is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with no registration fees
EDITOR’S NOTE
As of September 3, 2025, the amnesty period is active, but time is running out—only 27 days left until enforcement resumes on September 30. Readers in informal settlements or relying on bypassed meters should act promptly to avoid penalties.
UgandaToday.co.ug invites affected consumers across the country to take advantage of this one-time opportunity to come clean, get registered, and ensure safe, legal access to electricity. For more information, reach out to UEDCL customer service or visit your nearest branch.
