
Uganda Today: U.S. Embassy Mourns the Passing of Fulbright Alumnus and Esteemed Makerere Don Dr. Brian Ssemujju

The United States Embassy in Kampala has expressed profound sorrow following the death of Dr. Brian Ssemujju, a revered Senior Lecturer at Makerere University and a distinguished Fulbright Program alumnus.
In an official condolence message shared via its communication platforms, the Embassy described Dr. Ssemujju as a “dedicated representative with the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network (USEA – Network)” whose contributions to journalism, academia, and U.S.-Uganda academic relations leave an enduring legacy.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Brian Ssemujju,” the statement read. “His contributions to journalism, education, and U.S.-Uganda academic exchange will be remembered with great admiration.”
Dr. Ssemujju, known for his commitment to critical thought and media literacy, played an instrumental role in nurturing a generation of Ugandan journalists. His academic work spanned themes of media ethics, political communication, and the role of journalism in democratic societies. As a Fulbright alumnus, he was also a vital bridge between Ugandan and American intellectual communities, actively fostering knowledge exchange through the U.S. Exchange Alumni Network.
His death is a significant loss not only to Makerere University’s Department of Journalism and Communication, where he served with distinction, but also to the wider academic and civic community.
The U.S. Embassy extended heartfelt condolences to Dr. Ssemujju’s family, colleagues, students, and the alumni network he so diligently served.
