In a small village on the outskirts, a farmer is turning an unlikely source into a lucrative business—grasshoppers. Meet James, a grassroots entrepreneur who has embraced this age-old delicacy, locally known in Uganda as “Nseenene,” transforming his farm into a thriving enterprise that provides both sustenance and income to his community.

Jame’s journey began five years ago when he realized the potential of grasshoppers, which are a popular snack in many communities, particularly during the rainy season. With an innovative spirit, he set up large green house trap where he rears these insects. His operation, which started as a small-scale venture, now sees thousands of grasshoppers reared, processed, and sold in local markets, making James a well-known figure in the area.

The grasshoppers are not just a source of income for James; they have also become a means of empowering his neighbors. He has trained over 50 farmers in his village, teaching them how to set up their green houses and rear the grasshoppers. This initiative has sparked a wave of grassroots farming, with more locals turning to this sustainable and eco-friendly method of earning a living.

James’s success story has also attracted attention beyond his village. He now supplies major towns and cities across, where grasshoppers are in high demand. His farm has grown to include a processing plant where the grasshoppers are cleaned, seasoned, and packaged for sale, ensuring quality and consistency in every batch.

But James’s vision doesn’t stop here. He is currently exploring ways to expand his operations to include export, tapping into international markets where edible insects are becoming increasingly popular as a source of protein. His long-term goal is to establish his country as a leader in the global edible insect market, providing a sustainable food source that is both nutritious and environmentally friendly.
