Buikwe District, Uganda — A fatal accident involving a Soroti-bound YY Coaches bus claimed the lives of three people in Buikwe District on Monday evening after the bus veered off the road and burst into flames.

According to preliminary accounts from the Mbale-based YY Bus Company management, the tragedy unfolded when the bus driver attempted to avoid hitting a boda boda rider who had suddenly entered the highway. In the evasive maneuver, the driver lost control, and the bus slid off the road before catching fire.

“We regret to confirm that three people died in the incident. The fire engulfed the bus immediately after it veered off the road. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased,” said the YY Bus Manager from Mbale in a phone interview with Uganda Today.

Eyewitnesses reported a scene of horror as flames quickly consumed the bus, making rescue efforts difficult. “It all happened so fast. People were screaming. The fire was intense,” said one survivor, who was pulled out by Good Samaritans.

The exact number of passengers on board at the time of the accident is still being verified. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and managed to transport the injured to nearby health facilities.

Police from Buikwe District have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, including the identity and whereabouts of the boda boda rider, who is believed to have fled the scene.

The latest incident adds to a worrying trend of fatal road crashes involving long-distance buses in Uganda, raising questions about road safety, driver vigilance, and boda boda discipline on highways.

YY Coaches, one of the most popular transport operators plying the eastern route, has pledged to cooperate fully with the authorities and has initiated internal assessments of its safety protocols.
