A 32-year-old male nurse at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala has died after contracting the Sudan strain of the Ebola virus, marking Uganda’s first Ebola-related fatality since the 2023 outbreak.

The Ministry of Health confirmed the outbreak, with Permanent Secretary Dr. Diana Atwine stating, “An outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease has been confirmed in Kampala, Uganda.”

The Sudan Ebola virus is one of six known species of the Ebola virus and is highly infectious, causing severe hemorrhagic fever. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and, in some cases, internal and external bleeding.

Health authorities are conducting contact tracing to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. The public is urged to remain vigilant, report any suspected cases, and adhere to preventive measures such as regular handwashing, avoiding contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms appear.

This incident underscores the ongoing risk of Ebola outbreaks in the region and highlights the critical importance of robust healthcare protocols and rapid response mechanisms to contain the virus and prevent further transmission.
