Sheema Mother Welcomes Sextuplets After Years of Childlessness

A Miracle in Sheema: Joy After Long Years of Waiting
In a rare and remarkable medical event, 40-year-old Glorious Betonde from Nyamufumura village in Sheema District, Uganda, has given birth to sextuplets—five boys and one girl—after enduring years of childlessness. The birth took place at Neo Care Fertility Centre in Mbarara City, leaving both the family and the medical community in awe.
The babies were delivered prematurely at seven months through a cesarean section and are currently receiving intensive care at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital. According to hospital sources, the medical staff are working around the clock to ensure the infants’ survival, given the fragility of their early development.
A Difficult Pregnancy, A Courageous Mother
Glorious’s journey to motherhood has been anything but smooth. Her pregnancy was marred by complications as early as the third month. By the seventh month, her health had deteriorated to a point where doctors determined early delivery was the safest course of action to protect both mother and babies.
“Carrying six lives at once is an extraordinary strain on the human body,” one of the attending physicians at Neo Care Fertility Centre said. “We’re grateful the delivery went smoothly, and we’re cautiously optimistic about the babies’ progress.”
Relief and Anxiety in Equal Measure
Though immensely grateful for the safe delivery, Glorious confessed to feeling overwhelmed by the reality ahead.
“I’m happy, but also scared,” she said. “After so many years of waiting, I now have six babies to care for. It’s a blessing, but also a big responsibility.”
Her story has begun to draw attention and sympathy from the public and charitable organizations, some of whom are already considering ways to support the new mother through what is expected to be an intense and demanding period of neonatal care and parenting.
Call for Support
Health professionals stress the need for continuous monitoring, specialized nutrition, and financial assistance to ensure the babies not only survive but thrive.
Community leaders and well-wishers in Sheema and beyond are being urged to lend a hand. As the country celebrates this miracle of life, it is also a poignant reminder of the importance of maternal health care, fertility support, and neonatal services across Uganda.
