UgandaToday: Several Were Reported Dead as NRM Supporters’ Truck Overturned in Kyazanga
Kyazanga, Uganda | December 22, 2025
Several people were reported dead while many others sustained injuries after a truck carrying supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) overturned in Kyazanga on Monday, triggering scenes of chaos and grief. The accident occurred on December 22, 2025, when the truck, reportedly transporting supporters from a political rally, lost control and overturned along a poorly maintained stretch of road.
High Speed and Potholes Blamed
Eyewitnesses told UgandaToday that the truck was traveling at high speed when it struck a series of potholes, causing the driver to lose control. “The vehicle bounced violently after hitting the potholes, and within seconds it overturned,” one witness said. “People were thrown out, others were trapped beneath the truck. It was terrifying.”
Several passengers were ejected from the vehicle on impact, while others were pinned under its weight, desperately calling for help.
Rescue Efforts Overwhelmed
Emergency responders, including police and medical teams, rushed to the scene following reports of the crash. However, rescue operations were hampered by the rough terrain and the sheer number of casualties.
Paramedics worked to stabilize the injured before transferring them to Kyazanga General Hospital and other nearby health facilities. Despite these efforts, several victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Disturbing Conduct at Accident Scene
Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere as tense and surreal. While some members of the public attempted to assist the injured, others were seen recording videos and laughing because victims were NRM supporters, behavior that has since drawn widespread condemnation. Videos circulating on social media have sparked public outrage, with many Ugandans calling for greater compassion and responsibility during emergencies.
Victims Yet to Be Fully Identified
Authorities say the identities of the deceased are still being verified. Preliminary information suggests that most of the victims were local residents traveling to attend a political event.
Families in Kyazanga and surrounding areas have begun receiving distressing news, with many rushing to hospitals in search of missing relatives. Community leaders warn that the emotional impact of the tragedy is likely to be profound.
Investigation Launched
Local authorities have confirmed that investigations into the crash are underway. Police are examining the condition of the road, the mechanical state of the vehicle, and possible driver negligence.
Road conditions in the area have long been criticized, with potholes posing a persistent danger to motorists and passengers alike.
Overloading Raises Safety Concerns
Sources at the scene indicated that the truck was heavily overloaded, carrying far more passengers than its capacity allowed. Safety experts say the overcrowding likely worsened the severity of injuries, as passengers had no means of securing themselves.
Despite repeated warnings against overloading vehicles and carrying passengers in trucks, the practice remains common, particularly during NRM political mobilization exercises. Hospital officials report that several of the injured remain in critical condition and have appealed to the public to avoid crowding medical facilities, allowing health workers to carry out emergency care uninterrupted.
