By Naikazi Joy, Uganda Today Correspondent – Busoga, Jinja

The Busoga sub-region continues to witness a worrying rise in traffic accidents, with yet another tragic incident occurring today, March 29, 2025. A motorcycle rider, identified as Odongo Robson through his phone SIM card, was critically injured in a collision along the Jinja-Iganga highway.

Eyewitnesses report that the accident occured because of a huge road hump which speeding Odongo failed to notice, hitting it with big thud that sent him into the drainage channel, leading to a devastating crash that left Odongo lying unconscious on the roadside. Good Samaritans quickly intervened and rushed him to Care Medical Clinic for emergency first aid.

According to Mulongo Denis, a medical personnel at Care Medical Clinic, Odongo was in a fragile state, gradually recovering from a semi-conscious condition. “The patient suffered severe injuries and is still under close monitoring. His condition remains critical, but we are doing everything possible to stabilize him,” Mulongo stated.

A Worsening Crisis on Busogaā€™s Roads

The incident adds to the growing list of traffic accidents that have turned the Busoga sub-region into a hotspot for road carnage. Reckless driving, speeding, and poor road infrastructure have been cited as major contributors to these tragedies. The absence of strict traffic enforcement has also emboldened careless motorists, further endangering road users, particularly motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Recent statistics from the Uganda Police Traffic Department indicate that Busoga registers an alarming number of road crashes every month, with motorcyclists being the most affected. Many victims suffer life-altering injuries, while others lose their lives due to delayed emergency response and lack of proper medical care.

Call for Immediate Action

Authorities and road safety activists are urging both the government and the public to take urgent action to mitigate the rising fatalities. Key recommendations include:

  • Increased traffic policing to enforce road regulations and curb reckless driving.
  • Public awareness campaigns to educate road users, especially boda boda riders, on safe riding practices.
  • Improved emergency response mechanisms to ensure swift medical attention for accident victims.
  • Better road infrastructure, including clear signage, speed bumps, and well-maintained highways.

Residents of Busoga are calling on the government to intervene before more lives are lost. “We need tougher penalties for reckless drivers and more street lighting on highways to reduce night-time accidents,” said Juma Kayemba, a boda boda rider in Jinja.

As Odongo Robson fights for his life, his accident serves as yet another grim reminder of the urgent need for stricter road safety measures in Busoga. Without immediate intervention, the region risks becoming an epicenter of traffic-related fatalities.
