Uganda Today Edition: President Museveni Highlights Parish Development Model Success Stories During Teso Sub-Region Tour
Serere, Uganda – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni resumed his regional tours to assess the progress of the Parish Development Model (PDM), this time focusing on the Teso sub-region. The initiative, designed to alleviate poverty at the grassroots level, has brought to light inspiring stories of resilience and transformation.
The President’s first stop was in Serere District, where he met Joseph Ijara, a model of entrepreneurial success and self-reliance. Ijara’s journey began in 2011 when, as a taxi driver, he attended one of the President’s rallies. After being delayed and losing his job, he resolved to take charge of his future. Using 2.5 acres of land, Ijara diversified into dairy farming, poultry, and manufacturing bar soap. Today, he earns a staggering 600 million shillings annually in net profit.
“Ijara listened to my message, acted, and is now reaping the benefits,” President Museveni said. “To those who complain about job scarcity, I urge you to follow his example. The tools for wealth creation are available to everyone willing to learn and apply them.”
In Kapelebyong District, the President visited Betty Atia, a PDM beneficiary who has ventured into pig farming. Starting with 1 million shillings, Atia invested in piglets and improved her pigsty. While challenges such as feeding costs and stray animals persist, her determination has not wavered.
“I am impressed by her resilience,” said Museveni. “Her story is a testament to the potential of the Parish Development Model in empowering individuals to overcome poverty. We will support her efforts by providing land and fencing to enhance her productivity.”
The President reiterated the importance of embracing the PDM as a tool for self-reliance and economic transformation. He encouraged Ugandans to take advantage of the available resources and training to unlock their potential.
The Teso tour underscores the government’s commitment to the PDM, which focuses on uplifting the 39% of households in the subsistence economy. The model promotes localized economic growth through skills development, financial access, and market linkages, empowering communities to drive their prosperity.
As the PDM continues to gain traction, success stories like those of Ijara and Atia serve as powerful examples of what is achievable when individuals embrace the principles of hard work and innovation.
Uganda Today will keep you updated on further developments from President Museveni’s regional tours and the progress of the PDM initiative.
