Pope Francis Discharged After Serious Health Scare

Pope Francis, 87, has been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after spending two weeks receiving intensive treatment for pneumonia. The pontiff, who has faced several health complications in recent years, was admitted with respiratory distress and underwent a rigorous medical regimen, including oxygen therapy.

Despite initial concerns over his condition, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that the Pope is now stable and will continue his recovery at the Vatican. Upon his discharge, Pope Francis waved to well-wishers, blessing those gathered outside the hospital.

Public Speculation: Could Pope Francis Resign?

The Pope’s recent hospitalization has reignited discussions about a potential resignation, similar to his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who stepped down in 2013 due to declining health. Benedict’s resignation was the first voluntary papal resignation in over 600 years, setting a precedent that some believe Pope Francis might follow.

During a previous interview, Pope Francis acknowledged that resignation could be an option if his health severely hindered his ability to lead the Church. However, following his hospital stay, he reassured the public, saying, “I feel well, I feel better,” dismissing immediate speculation of stepping down.

Global Reactions and Prayers for the Pope

The Pope’s hospitalization sparked a wave of concern and prayers worldwide. Religious communities, including Catholic congregations in Uganda, held special prayer sessions for his recovery. In Italy, migrant transgender women gathered at a church in Torvaianica to pray for the Pope, recognizing him as an advocate for inclusivity within the Church.

Faithful believers and Vatican officials remain optimistic about his recovery, but concerns persist over his ability to maintain his demanding papal duties.

What’s Next for Pope Francis?

As he returns to the Vatican, Pope Francis is expected to resume his responsibilities, though with a lighter schedule. Reports indicate that his planned international trips may be reconsidered, depending on medical advice.

For now, Pope Francis continues to lead the Catholic Church, but his recent health struggles serve as a reminder of the immense physical toll the papacy demands. While resignation remains a possibility in the future, it appears that—for now—he is determined to continue his mission.
