Uganda Today Edition: NUP Calls for Expressions of Interest in Kawempe North MP and Kazo Angola LC3 By-Elections
Kampala, January 28, 2025 – The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially issued a call for expressions of interest from qualified party members to contest in the upcoming by-elections for the Kawempe North Member of Parliament seat and the Kazo Angola LC3 councillor position.
The announcement, made through a circular signed by Mercy Walukamba, Chairperson of the Election Management Committee (EMC), invites NUP members who meet the eligibility criteria to submit their applications physically at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule. The window for application submissions opens on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at 9:00 AM and will close on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 12:00 noon. Nominated candidates are expected to be announced on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
Applicants are required to submit a copy of their party membership card, National ID, Curriculum Vitae, and certified copies of their academic qualifications.
NUP’s Political Dominance in Kawempe
Kawempe North has long been a stronghold of the National Unity Platform, reflecting the party’s dominant influence in urban Kampala politics. The constituency has consistently voted overwhelmingly for NUP candidates in previous elections, largely due to the party’s strong grassroots mobilization, youthful support base, and its vocal stance against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
The late Muhammad Ssegirinya, the former MP for Kawempe North, was a staunch NUP member whose tenure was marked by his fiery advocacy for opposition causes and welfare programs for his constituents. His recent death necessitated the by-election, which is now set to be a crucial test for the party’s ability to retain its grip on the constituency.
Similarly, the LC3 councillor seat for Kazo Angola is another critical position where NUP is expected to maintain dominance. The party’s strong presence in local governance structures within Kawempe has ensured that opposition politics remains vibrant in the division.
What This By-Election Means for NUP
With growing internal and external political challenges, this by-election presents an opportunity for NUP to reaffirm its grassroots support and organizational strength. The competition for the party’s ticket is expected to be fierce, as the eventual nominee will likely have a strong chance of winning the parliamentary seat given the constituency’s voting history.
The ruling NRM and other opposition parties, such as the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), may attempt to field candidates, but past trends suggest that NUP remains the dominant force in the area.
As the nomination process unfolds, political observers will be keen to see the caliber of individuals who step forward for consideration. The by-election is expected to further galvanize political activity in Kawempe, with NUP looking to maintain its hold on a key urban constituency.
