Despite the chaos, NUP’s internal electoral preparations moved ahead. At a closed-door National Executive Committee meeting held at the party headquarters, Kyagulanyi unveiled the new Electoral Management Committee that will steer the #ProtestVote2026 campaign.

Ms. Chemtai Harriet, a long-serving NUP coordinator from Sebei sub-region, was appointed Chairperson, with Dr. Ivan Ssempijja, a respected youth leader and former Makerere Guild President, as Vice Chair.

Eddie Mutwe in Agony as NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi Decries Escalating State Repression

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has once again raised alarm over what it calls state-orchestrated brutality and judicial repression following the production of Edward Ssebuufu, popularly known as Eddie Mutwe, in a Lwengo court under visibly tortured conditions.

Mutwe, a close aide to NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, appeared in court Monday morning, not in a police vehicle, but rather a private car under heavy shielding by plainclothes security operatives. Eyewitnesses and journalists on the scene observed disturbing scenes as the security operatives, including a notably large woman in plain attire, aggressively tried to block cameras from capturing Mutwe’s state. Despite these efforts, some images and video snippets made their way to the public, showing a barely mobile Mutwe limping and being helped to walk, grimacing in anguish.

Despite the man shield provided by one police officer and several other plain clothed security operatives, to prevent press cameras from capturing tortured and ailing Eddie Mutwe footage while alighting out of private car, press cameras were able to capture images as he was being helped to walk into Lwengo courtroom.

“It’s evident they tortured him,” said Kyagulanyi in a statement. “His head and feet are swollen. He is unable to walk on his own. This is what Museveni’s son did to him! And yet, instead of releasing him to seek urgent medical care, they rushed him to court and shamelessly had him remanded.”

The development comes amidst broader concerns of systematic targeting of opposition figures. According to NUP, Eddie Mutwe was in perfect health prior to his abduction—only for him to reappear days later, broken and battered.
