Ntungamo Thrusts Demos To Free Besigye: Muhoozi Grits His Teeth, It Can Never Happen
Public sentiment remains clear—many believe Dr. Besigye’s detention is purely political rather than legal.

Uganda Today Edition: Dr. Kizza Besigye’s Incarceration Sparks Outrage Amid Muhoozi Keinerugaba’s Defiant Statements
KAMPALA – The continued detention of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye despite a standing Supreme Court order for his release has intensified political tensions in Uganda. The order, which also applies to other prisoners who were battling court martial trials, has been outrightly disregarded, particularly following First Son and Presidential Advisor Gen. Muhoozi Keinerugaba’s repeated declarations that Besigye will not be freed.
Public sentiment remains clear—many believe Dr. Besigye’s detention is purely political rather than legal. The initial allegations against him, that he was found in possession of firearms in Nairobi, have long been dismissed as a fabrication intended to silence one of the most vocal critics of the government. His current incarceration, despite the Supreme Court ruling, only reinforces the widespread perception that he is being persecuted rather than prosecuted.

Muhoozi’s continued public statements undermining judicial orders have led to growing calls for President Yoweri Museveni, as Commander-in-Chief, to rein in his son’s actions. The arbitrary defiance of court decisions by military leaders sets a dangerous precedent for Uganda’s legal system and democracy. The question remains: is Uganda still governed by the rule of law, or has raw power replaced constitutional order?
Ntungamo Communities Take Action
In the face of this judicial defiance, the people of Ntungamo have risen in protest, demanding the unconditional release of Dr. Besigye. Demonstrations have erupted across the region, with citizens holding placards condemning his continued detention. Their message is clear—Besigye is not a criminal, and the government’s actions amount to political oppression.
“We will not sit back and watch an injustice unfold before our eyes,” one protester stated. “This is not just about Besigye; it is about the suppression of all Ugandans who dare to speak against injustice.”
However, the demonstrations have also ignited frustration against the International Community of Banyankigezi (ICOB), an organization that many claim has failed to defend one of their own. The Ntungamo community has particularly condemned ICOB, accusing it of being a platform for self-serving elites who only mobilize for personal gain while ignoring critical issues affecting their people.
“The silence of ICOB on Dr. Besigye’s plight is deafening,” a protestor remarked. “ICOB has proven itself to be a useless entity—a gathering of political hyenas only interested in influence and perks while ignoring the very people they claim to represent.”
The criticisms of ICOB raise serious questions about the organization’s purpose and credibility. Is it truly an advocacy platform for its people, or merely a means for a select few to solidify their power? The failure to speak out on Besigye’s condition, despite his significant contributions to Uganda’s democratic struggle, is an indictment on the organization’s integrity.

The Call for Justice
The blatant disregard of a Supreme Court order is a dangerous signal for Uganda’s judiciary and democratic processes. If court decisions can be ignored at will, then the entire legal system is at risk of being rendered powerless. The insistence by Muhoozi Keinerugaba that Besigye will remain incarcerated despite the highest court’s ruling vindicates public fears that the case against Besigye was politically motivated from the start.
President Museveni, as Commander-in-Chief, must take decisive action to correct this injustice. Muhoozi’s statements and the continued defiance of judicial rulings not only discredit Uganda’s commitment to democracy but also send a chilling message to opposition voices across the country. If justice is to prevail, Besigye must be freed, and the rule of law must be restored.
As protests continue and pressure mounts, Uganda stands at a crossroads. Will it uphold its constitutional order, or will power politics continue to override justice? The country watches closely, as the fate of Besigye remains a defining test for Uganda’s future.
