Uganda Today Edition: Nalukoola Sworn In As Kawempe North MP as Speaker Among Orders New SUV for Him
Kampala, Uganda – A rather animated and politically charged event unfolded at Parliament on Wednesday as Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi was officially sworn in as the new Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Speaker Anita Among, took place inside her Board Room instead of the usual plenary hall, given that Parliament is currently on recess to allow committees to process Ministerial Policy Statements.
In a move that raised eyebrows, Speaker Among wasted no time in issuing a directive to Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige, instructing him to swiftly procure a brand-new SUV for the newly inaugurated MP. The Speaker emphasized the urgency of ensuring that Nalukoola has the necessary tools to execute his legislative duties effectively.
Patronizing yet warm, Speaker Among appeared to establish a close rapport with Nalukoola, constantly referring to him as “Elias” as if they had known each other for years. This personal touch continued throughout the event as she cheered and ululated while Nalukoola introduced his family members, including his father Hajji Swaib Sserunjogi, his wife Shakirah Nansukusa, and one of his children. Also in attendance were some of his most loyal political supporters, including Bobi Giant and religious leader Nasser Kibirige Takuba, a former Kawempe Division Mayor.

Nalukoola, never one to miss a chance to inject humor into a serious setting, had Speaker Among in stitches when he jokingly demanded more time to speak in Parliament than other MPs. He justified this request by pointing out that his predecessor, Mohammed Ssegirinya, faced health and legal challenges that left the people of Kawempe North underrepresented for much of the previous term. Speaker Among, clearly entertained by the request, nodded in agreement, much to the amusement of those present.
The newly sworn-in MP also took a moment to express his gratitude to the Speaker for ensuring that his oath-taking happened without delay—a stark contrast to the Electoral Commission’s slow process of gazetting his victory.
Nalukoola was accompanied by several National Unity Platform (NUP) bigwigs, including Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi and Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi. Ssenyonyi, in a direct yet lighthearted comment in Speaker Among’s presence, warned Nalukoola about the tough political terrain he was about to enter but wished him well, acknowledging his resilience.
Muwanga Kivumbi, on the other hand, praised Nalukoola as a high-value legislator and urged Ssenyonyi to deploy him to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which he chairs, arguing that Nalukoola’s intellect and dedication were best suited for scrutinizing government expenditures.
Meanwhile, in his first bold statement as MP, Nalukoola didn’t mince words when addressing reporters outside the Speaker’s Board Room. He called upon President Museveni to concede that the people of Kawempe North had spoken, rejecting the ruling NRM’s candidate, Faridah Nambi. With his signature sarcasm, Nalukoola reminded the long-serving leader that democracy only allows for one winner at a time, and in this case, it was him and the NUP.
With the swearing-in complete and a brand-new SUV on the way, all eyes will be on Elias Nalukoola Luyimbaazi to see how he navigates the intricate and often murky waters of the 11th Parliament.
