Uganda Today:  Musician Stecia Mayanja Inaugurated as President of National Peasants’ Party Amidst Political Party Inauguration Galore

By Uganda Today Political Desk

In an unfolding wave of political reawakening sweeping across Uganda, celebrated singer and actress Hajjat Stecia Mayanja has officially stepped into the political arena as the newly inaugurated president of the National Peasants’ Party (NPP). The inauguration ceremony, which struck a peculiar blend of theatre and political tradition, was held earlier today and marked by the symbolic handover of a pen, party flag, and the national flag of Uganda—signifying the official transfer of leadership from the outgoing party president.

According to reliable sources, the National Peasants’ Party (NPP) has quietly existed for over two decades, though its activities remained largely obscure until now. The party’s symbol, a pen, is a metaphor for empowerment through education, expression, and grassroots mobilisation—values that the newly inaugurated president said she is determined to revitalise.

“I am deeply honoured to be entrusted with this historic responsibility,” said Hajjat Stecia Mayanja in her acceptance speech. “This is a new chapter not just for NPP, but for the peasants of Uganda who have long been silenced and ignored. We are rewriting the narrative with the power of the pen.”

In what some observers dubbed a “comedy turned reality,” the handover event was both eccentric and emotionally stirring. The outgoing president Erias Wamala Muyaki, a rather old man whose name has not been widely known in the political mainstream, ceremoniously passed on the party’s symbols, symbolising a renewed vision for Uganda’s rural and marginalised communities.

A Surge of Political Party Inaugurations

Stecia Mayanja’s unexpected rise to political leadership comes amid a notable resurgence in political party registrations and inaugurations ahead of the 2026 general elections. Uganda is currently experiencing what analysts are calling an “inauguration galore,” with a flurry of new political entities entering the scene. These recent developments signal a growing appetite for alternative voices and platforms in Uganda’s increasingly dynamic political theatre.

Among the recently inaugurated or revived political parties are:

  • Democratic Front (DF) – led by Mathias Mpuuga funded after breaking away from NUP

  • The Ecological Party (EP) – Championed by former Muhammad Nsereko seeking to address injustices in land and environmental sectors.

  • National Peasants’ Party (NPP) – Now led by Stecia Mayanja, focused on elevating the socio-economic welfare of rural Ugandans.

  • The Common Man’s Party (CMP) – Rejuvenated from Uganda Economic Party (UEP) by Mubarak Munyagwa former Kawempe South constituency who was aso affiliated to Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), fell out with them and aligned himself with the recently inaugurated PFF founded by incarcerated Dr. Kizza Besigye nly to turn around in June 24,2025  to announce his new party..

  • People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) – Founded by Dr. Besigye as a break away from FDC.

This unprecedented blossoming of new political parties is unfolding in the backdrop of growing public dissatisfaction with the current status quo, especially among the youth, creatives, and the economically disenfranchised. The resurgence also mirrors mounting calls for political renewal and structural reforms.

Is Celebrity Power the New Political Currency?

Stecia Mayanja’s transition from stage to statecraft is reminiscent of other Ugandan entertainers-turned-politicians such as Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine). Her move is likely to stir public debate on the role of celebrities in political leadership and whether stardom can translate into impactful governance. Stecia, had prior to being sworn in as a president for a political party leadership, had announced that she would contest as Kampala woman member of Parliament.

Conclusion

As Uganda braces for an intense electioneering period, the emergence of fresh political voices and platforms like the National Peasants’ Party injects new energy and complexity into the national political equation. Whether Stecia Mayanja’s leadership will transform peasant struggles into structured political gain remains to be seen—but what is clear is that the political landscape is undergoing a dramatic facelift.
