Lubaga Justice Community Centre And Fellowship For Community Enlightenment Join Forces With Climate Action Network To Launch Global Week Of Action For Climate Finance In Uganda

Uganda Today Edition: Lubaga Justice Community Centre and Fellowship for Community Enlightenment Join Forces with Climate Action Network to Launch Global Week of Action for Climate Finance in Uganda

Two influential community groups, the Lubaga Justice Community Centre and the Fellowship for Community Enlightenment, have teamed up with the Ugandan chapter of the global Climate Action Network (CAN) to spearhead a critical campaign advocating for climate justice and an end to fossil fuel extraction. The Global Week of Action for Climate Finance and a Fossil-Free Future (GWAC) was officially launched on 13th September 2024, marking the beginning of a week-long series of activities aimed at sensitizing Ugandans and calling for urgent climate action.

Under the hashtags #EndFossilFuels, #PayUpForClimateFinance, #FastFairForever, #Renewables4AfricaNOW, and #GWACAfrica, the campaign seeks to address the looming global climate disaster. Climate change, driven by reckless human activities such as fossil fuel excavation, threatens to push the world towards a catastrophic climate crisis. The two community groups, together with CAN Uganda, are advocating for a sustainable transition to renewable energy sources like wind, hydro, and solar power to safeguard the planet and humanity.

A Call for Global Responsibility

The campaign highlights the need for global unity, with a strong emphasis on the responsibility of the global north to pay the $5 trillion USD climate debt owed to the global south. This debt, long overdue, is crucial for supporting vulnerable countries in implementing climate-friendly policies that align with climate justice. The urgency of the situation demands immediate action to prevent the devastating consequences of climate inaction.

Mr. Awadi Hamid Hashim rightly believes that incorporating drama especially comprised of children, is the best way of advocacy towards doing away with excavation of fossil fuels and embark on use of renewable energy like solar and hydro electric energy. Below is Awadi and his drama group.

Activities Planned for the Week

To spread awareness and drive meaningful change, the Global Week of Action includes the following key activities:

  1. 13th September: The campaign officially kicked off with a press conference aimed at launching the week-long advocacy efforts.
  2. Tree Seedling Distribution: Throughout the week and beyond, tree seedlings will be distributed to communities, symbolizing the fight for a greener and more sustainable future.
  3. 15th September: A public debate involving community members will take place, allowing individuals to discuss and share ideas on the importance of climate finance and a fossil-free future.
  4. Social Media Campaigns: Running from 13th September and continuing indefinitely, the campaign will leverage online platforms to engage Ugandans and the global community in advocating for climate finance and renewable energy.
  5. 16th September: A giant screen will showcase a video of Karua’s work on the green revolution in Kenya, accompanied by music, dance, and drama to highlight climate resilience.
  6. 20th September: The week will culminate in a sports gala, celebrating community engagement and raising further awareness about the importance of transitioning to a sustainable, fossil-free energy future.

Walking the Talk

The campaign’s central message is clear: time for talking is over. As the climate crisis escalates, urgent action is needed to mitigate the damage caused to the environment. The Lubaga Justice Community Centre, the Fellowship for Community Enlightenment, and CAN Uganda are calling on all Ugandans to join the movement, participate in the activities, and push for a future free of fossil fuels.

Through this collective effort, the campaign hopes to inspire both local and global communities to take immediate and decisive steps to avert the impending climate catastrophe and ensure a safe and sustainable future for generations to come.
