Uganda Today Edition: Kyagulanyi Raises Alarm Over Threats to His Life
KAMPALA – Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has once again sounded the alarm over threats to his life, accusing President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, of orchestrating a campaign of intimidation against him and his supporters.
In a tweet posted on Friday February 21, 2025 at 2:43 pm had, the time we went to ress, attracted 270k respondents, Kyagulanyi stated that armed men in civilian attire have been patrolling his residence, raising fears of an imminent attack. “Whatever happens to me, Museveni and his son are responsible. From yesterday, our home is being patrolled by strange men in civilian clothes who appear to be armed. We have information that they’re after my life – as threatened by Museveni’s son a few days ago,” he wrote.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader further revealed that members of his security team had been abducted, with his party headquarters currently under siege by state operatives. “They have gone ahead to trail and abduct many of our comrades, including part of my security team. Right now, they’re raiding our Party headquarters. We expect anything from the cowardly regime – BUT WE ARE NOT INTIMIDATED!” he added.
Escalation of Abductions
Kyagulanyi’s statement comes amid a fresh wave of abductions targeting opposition figures. In recent days, two key NUP election committee officials, Walukamba and Radna Musa, were forcefully taken by unknown operatives. Their whereabouts were known two days after they were dumped at Kireka, adding to the growing list of opposition members who have mysteriously disappeared in what appears to be a state crackdown.
A Worsening Climate of Fear
The latest developments have reignited fears of heightened political persecution, especially as Uganda edges closer to upcoming elections. The NUP has consistently accused the ruling regime of employing military tactics to silence opposition voices, with many of its members facing arbitrary arrests, torture, and forced disappearances.
Despite the dangers, Kyagulanyi remains defiant, insisting that the opposition will not be intimidated into submission. “We know this regime is desperate, but Ugandans will not give in to fear. The struggle for a free and democratic Uganda continues,” he said.
International Concerns Mount
Human rights organizations and foreign missions have previously called on the Ugandan government to end politically motivated arrests and ensure the safety of opposition figures. However, the state has remained largely silent on the matter, dismissing concerns as propaganda.
As tensions rise, the nation watches closely, hoping that the growing political hostility does not escalate into more violence. The safety of opposition leaders and their supporters remains uncertain, and the question lingers: Will Uganda’s leadership heed the calls for democracy, or will the repression continue unchecked?
