Uganda Today Edition: Kawempe North BY-election: NUP Holds Peaceful Rally At Kawempe Mbogo
By Uganda Today News Desk
Kampala – In a rare show of political tolerance from government, the National Unity Platform (NUP) successfully held a peaceful campaign rally for its Kawempe North by-election candidate, Elias Nalukoola Luyimbaazi, at Kawempe Mbogo. Unlike previous opposition rallies, this event was free from interference by security forces, allowing supporters to express their political allegiance without fear of repression.
A Rally Without Police and JATT Interference
For the first time in weeks, NUP supporters gathered without being dispersed by police or JATT operatives. The absence of brutal crackdowns created an electrifying atmosphere of freedom, with thousands of supporters turning up in solidarity. At the end of the rally, they were able to escort their party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, back to his home in Magere without incident.
Corruption Takes Center Stage
In his address, Kyagulanyi focused on the rampant corruption plaguing Uganda, drawing from recent remarks made by the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Betty Kamya. She had revealed that out of Uganda’s 49 million people, only about 35,000 individuals have access to public funds and decision-making power. These elites, Kyagulanyi noted, are responsible for siphoning over UGX 10 trillion annually, enriching themselves at the expense of the nation.
“They are the ones who have turned Uganda into one of the most corrupt countries in the world. They are the reason our schools, hospitals, and factories are in ruins. They are the ones who have pushed young Ugandans into Arab countries as maids because there are no jobs at home. They are the ones sending the impoverished police and military to beat up anti-corruption activists,” Kyagulanyi declared, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.
A Call to Choose a Side
As the Kawempe North by-election nears, Kyagulanyi framed the contest as a battle between the oppressed and their oppressors. He urged Ugandans to decide where they belong – among the 49 million exploited tax-payers or the privileged few who plunder national resources.
“Ladies and gentlemen, as we face the Kawempe North election and next year’s general election, we are asking the people of Uganda to choose. Do you stand with the 49 million oppressed, or with the 35,000 looters? And the number of the looters is even smaller because not all of them approve of this mess. Every Ugandan has a choice to make,” he emphasized.
A Moment of Political Resilience
The peaceful nature of the rally was a stark contrast to the violent scenes that have characterized opposition gatherings in the past. Many supporters interpreted this as a sign that the NUP’s resilience and public support cannot be ignored. As the election draws closer, the opposition remains determined to challenge the status quo and give Ugandans an alternative leadership.
The question remains: will this moment of peace last, or will security forces revert to their usual heavy-handed approach? The coming days will tell.
