Kampala University has taken a significant step towards enhancing access to higher education by introducing short courses in all disciplines across its campuses in Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya. The announcement was made by the university’s Director of Short Courses, Hussein Walakira, during a press briefing held at the main campus in Ggaba, Kampala.

Mr. Walakira emphasized that this initiative is part of the university’s broader mission to provide inclusive, flexible, and practical education tailored to meet the diverse needs of students, professionals, and lifelong learners. He noted that the short courses will target a wide range of disciplines, including business, technology, health sciences, education, agriculture, and the arts.

Campuses to Roll Out the Program

The short courses will be available at all Kampala University campuses, including:

Ggaba Main Campus: Serving the central region of Uganda.

Mutundwe Campus: Catering to urban learners in Kampala.

Luweero Campus: Targeting students in the northern central region.

Mbale Campus: Offering access to learners in eastern Uganda.

Rwanda and Kenya Campuses: Extending opportunities to East African students beyond Uganda’s borders.

Flexible Learning for Modern Times

According to Mr. Walakira, the courses are designed to be flexible, allowing learners to pursue their education without disrupting their work or family commitments. Programs will be delivered through a blend of in-person classes, online sessions, and modular workshops.

“These short courses will enable individuals to acquire specific skills in a short time, making them more competitive in the job market,” Walakira said.The University also started teaching languages, Chinese, Swahili and Luganda. Qualifications for entry and registration are open to will applicants.

Affordable and Accredited Education

Kampala University has ensured that the short courses remain affordable while maintaining the high academic standards the institution is known for. Certificates earned from these courses will be recognized locally and internationally, giving learners a competitive edge.

Driving Innovation and Skills Development

The introduction of short courses aligns with Kampala University’s vision of fostering innovation and skills development. The programs are expected to address Uganda’s and the region’s pressing demand for specialized training in areas such as digital marketing, entrepreneurship, nursing, sustainable agriculture, and ICT.

With campuses strategically located in different regions, the university hopes to attract learners from various socio-economic backgrounds and contribute to regional development.

Enrollment for the short courses is already open, and interested individuals can visit the university’s website or any of its campuses for more information. The first intake is set to commence in February 2025.
