Uganda Today Edition: Kabaka’s 70th Birthday Ignites Unprecedented Corporate Support
Makerere University, UPPC, and Global Brands Join the Celebrations
Kampala, Uganda – The highly anticipated 70th birthday celebrations of the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, have captured the attention of both local and international corporate entities. Leading the pack are Makerere University and Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC), which have taken center stage in supporting this historic occasion.
This milestone is particularly significant as Kabaka Mutebi II becomes the first reigning Kabaka to clock 70 years of age while on the throne in the Kingdom of Buganda. The kingdom, with its rich history dating back to the late 14th century, is over 600 years old. It is believed to have been founded when the Ganda people, under their Kabaka (ruler), established strong centralized control over their domains, forming the Buganda Kingdom.
As part of the celebrations, corporate organizations have pledged financial support, branded merchandise, and sponsorships for the annual Kabaka Birthday Run, a flagship biggest Uganda one day calendar year event that raises awareness and funds for key health initiatives in Uganda. This year’s edition has seen a surge in corporate participation, underscoring the Kabaka’s influence and the significance of this milestone.
Makerere University’s Role in the Celebrations
Makerere University, Uganda’s premier institution of higher learning, has actively joined the celebrations, demonstrating its commitment to supporting cultural and social initiatives. The university leadership recently received a consignment of branded sports kits, including running vests, water bottles, and promotional materials for the Kabaka Birthday Run.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University professor Barnabas Nawange reaffirmed the institution’s longstanding relationship with the Buganda Kingdom and praised the Kabaka’s unwavering efforts in promoting education and youth empowerment.

Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) Steps In
UPPC, Uganda’s leading government-owned printing corporation, has also pledged its support by producing high-quality promotional materials, souvenirs, and banners to commemorate the Kabaka’s 70th birthday. The corporation’s head of public relations team Rebecca Nyakairu emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage and commended the Kabaka for his contributions to national unity and development.
International Brands Join the Movement
The Kabaka’s birthday celebrations have not only attracted local entities but also international corporations that recognize the significance of the Buganda Kingdom in Uganda’s socio-economic landscape. Leading telecommunications giant Airtel Uganda renewed its sponsorship of the Kabaka Birthday Run, while beverage and sports brands have also joined in, making this year’s event one of the most widely supported in recent history.
A Birthday to Remember
As the celebrations gain momentum, thousands of Ugandans are expected to take part in various activities leading up to the grand birthday event. The Kabaka Birthday Run, scheduled to take place in April, remains the highlight of the celebrations, bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate not just the Kabaka’s life but also the Kingdom’s rich cultural heritage.
The unprecedented corporate support for the Kabaka’s 70th birthday is a testament to his enduring legacy and the unity he has fostered among Ugandans. With Makerere University and UPPC leading the way, the celebrations promise to be grander and more impactful than ever before.
