Bulange, Mengo – April 12, 2025

In a significant step toward reviving agricultural productivity and empowering rural communities, the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, has donated 18 brand new tractors—one for each masaza (county) in Buganda.

The generous donation was officially unveiled at a colorful ceremony held at Bulange, Mengo, where Masaza representatives gathered to receive the equipment. The tractors, fitted with modern implements, are expected to enhance large-scale farming, mechanize food production, and increase household income across the Kingdom.

Speaking at the handover, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to economic transformation through agriculture, which remains the backbone of Buganda’s economy.

“This donation is not just about machines. It is a symbol of the Kabaka’s vision to see every household prosper through hard work and innovation. With these tractors, we are modernizing agriculture and giving our people tools to thrive,” Mayiga said.

The Kabaka’s agricultural push aligns with the Kingdom’s broader economic empowerment agenda, particularly its “Emmwaanyi Terimba” (Coffee Never Lies) campaign which encourages youth and women to participate in commercial agriculture.

The tractors will be managed at the county level under the supervision of local chiefs, with training programs scheduled to ensure responsible use and maintenance. In addition to plowing services, the Kingdom plans to link farmers to markets and provide access to improved seeds and post-harvest handling technologies.

Local response to the initiative has been overwhelmingly positive. Farmers from rural counties such as Kyaggwe, Bulemeezi, and Buddu expressed gratitude for what they termed “a long-awaited lifeline” in their efforts to embrace modern farming.

The initiative also comes at a time when Uganda is grappling with climate change impacts and food insecurity, making the Kabaka’s intervention both timely and strategic.

As the Kingdom looks ahead to a greener and more food-secure future, this tractor donation underscores Buganda’s enduring spirit of self-reliance and innovation.
