Uganda Today: Jeff Bezos Weds Lauren Sánchez in a Lavish Venetian Affair Amid Local Protests
Venice, Italy | June 29, 2025 — In a dazzling display of wealth, romance, and controversy, American billionaire Jeff Bezos and media personality Lauren Sánchez were officially married in a grand ceremony on June 27, 2025, in Venice — the storied Italian city famed for its canals, Renaissance art, and, increasingly, for hosting ultra-exclusive celebrity events.
The multi-day wedding celebration, which unfolded across several historical landmarks in Venice, has captivated global media, drawn a star-studded guest list, and ignited fierce protests among locals and cultural activists over what they describe as the “commodification” of their beloved city.
A Love Story Crowned with Diamond Splendor
The Bezos-Sánchez romance began in the wake of their respective divorces in 2019. Bezos, the founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, previously married to philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, shares four children with her. Sánchez, a former television anchor and helicopter pilot, also has two children with her ex-husband, Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell.
In 2023, Bezos proposed in the South of France with a jaw-dropping 30-carat pink diamond set in a platinum band — an engagement ring estimated to cost between $3–5 million. The couple celebrated their engagement with two lavish parties — one aboard Bezos’s superyacht Koru off the Amalfi Coast, and another hosted by media mogul Barry Diller and designer Diane von Furstenberg in Beverly Hills.
Venetian Grandeur: A Wedding Fit for Billionaire Royalty
The couple exchanged vows at the historic basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th-century church nestled on an island in the Venetian lagoon. The ceremony featured a performance by Matteo Bocelli, son of legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli.
Their nuptials were just one chapter of an opulent itinerary that included a Great Gatsby-themed gala, a pyjama party, a foam party, and more — with Sánchez reportedly donning 27 different outfits over the course of the celebration. The couple stayed at the Aman Venice hotel, housed in the magnificent 16th-century Palazzo Papadopoli.

Earlier in the week, a pre-wedding reception took place in the cloisters of the Madonna dell’Orto church. The main post-wedding celebrations were held at the historic Venetian Arsenal — a decision made after security concerns surrounding the presence of high-profile guests and rising Middle East tensions.
A Star-Studded Guest List, Sky-High Spending
Between 200 and 250 elite guests flew in for the event, many on the 90 private jets that reportedly landed at Marco Polo Airport — boosting local aviation revenues by an estimated 48 million euros. Attendees included global icons such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger, Barbra Streisand, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Kim and Khloé Kardashian.
Top hotels, including the Cipriani, Danieli, and Palazzo Pisani Gritti, were fully booked, and all of Venice’s water taxis were reportedly reserved to ferry guests across the lagoon. The Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, hailed the wedding as an “economic windfall” for the city, predicting millions in returns for local businesses.
To appease critics and underline their commitment to Venice’s heritage, the couple donated 2 million euros to fund lagoon research in the Veneto region.
Venetian Backlash: A City Turned Stage Set
Not everyone in Venice was celebrating. Activists under the banner “No Space for Bezos” staged creative protests, accusing the billionaire of turning their city into a “luxury theme park for the ultra-rich.” Graffiti and protest banners adorned iconic locations such as the Rialto Bridge and the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore.

Some activists even floated inflatable crocodiles in the canals to mock the wedding’s opulence. “Venice is being treated like a stage,” one protester told local media, lamenting the erosion of public life and the rising costs of living that exclude ordinary Venetians from their own city.
A Tale of Glamour and Tension
While the Bezos-Sánchez wedding has undoubtedly gone down as one of the most extravagant celebrity weddings since George Clooney wed Amal Alamuddin in Venice in 2015, it also underscores a mounting global debate: who gets to use historic public spaces, and at what cost?
For Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, Venice offered the perfect backdrop for their love story. For many Venetians, it was yet another reminder of how far their city has drifted from being a living community — and how close it is to becoming a billionaire’s playground.
