UgandaToday: “I Escaped a Night Raid” — Kyagulanyi Contradicts Police, Says Family Under Siege at Magere

Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has issued a dramatic account of a late-night security operation at his home in Magere, Kasangati, directly contradicting an official police statement that insisted he had neither been arrested nor left his residence.

In a statement released during the night of January 16, 2026, Kyagulanyi said military and police forces raided his home under the cover of darkness, switching off electricity, disabling sections of the CCTV system, and deploying helicopters that hovered overhead.

“Last night was very difficult at our home in Magere,” Kyagulanyi said, adding that the operation bore all the hallmarks of a coordinated security crackdown.

Crucially, Kyagulanyi asserted that he escaped the raid and is currently not at his Magere residence—an account that flatly contradicts an earlier statement by the Police Spokesperson, who told the media that Kyagulanyi was at home in Magere-Kasangati and had not been arrested.

“I want to confirm that I managed to escape from them. Currently, I am not at home,” Kyagulanyi said, noting that his wife and other family members remain under what he described as house arrest.

He explained that widespread confusion about his whereabouts was fueled by a nationwide internet shutdown and the heavy military presence around his home, which prevented access and led neighbours to believe he had been abducted.

Kyagulanyi further alleged that security forces are actively hunting for him. “These criminals are looking for me everywhere, and I am trying my best to keep safe,” he said.

Beyond the events at his home, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader launched a blistering attack on the Electoral Commission, reiterating his total rejection of the presidential election results being announced by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama.

He accused the state of orchestrating ballot stuffing, militarising the electoral process, detaining opposition leaders and polling officials, and manipulating results across multiple constituencies.

“These results have zero backing,” Kyagulanyi said, adding that NUP candidates are being targeted even in areas where the party has what he termed “100 percent evidence” of victory.

Kyagulanyi also condemned the killing of civilians who, according to him, have attempted to peacefully protest against what he called “broad daylight thuggery,” insisting that Ugandans have a constitutional right to defend their sovereignty through lawful protest.

“The people of Uganda have the right to determine a government of their choice — not the kind of criminality we’re witnessing,” he said.

Ending his statement on a defiant note, Kyagulanyi declared: “The people of Uganda will ultimately win.”
