Honoring Courage and Conviction: Calvin Echodu’s Martyrs Day Message Calls for Unity, Faith, and Renewal in Eastern Uganda
Martyrs Day, marked annually on June 3rd, commemorates the sacrifice of 45 Christian converts—Anglicans and Catholics—executed between 1885 and 1887 under the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda. Their unwavering refusal to abandon their faith laid the foundation for religious freedom in Uganda and transformed Namugongo into one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites on the African continent.
As Uganda pauses to honor the enduring legacy of the Uganda Martyrs, Mr. Calvin Echodu—aspirant for the position of NRM National Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda—has delivered a moving tribute that blends reverence for the past with a hopeful vision for the future.

A Message Rooted in Unity and Moral Conviction
In his Martyrs Day message, Mr. Echodu reflects on this powerful heritage. “The Uganda Martyrs remind us that faith, resilience, and unity are not mere ideals, but sacred pillars upon which our nation stands,” he stated.
He calls on Ugandans to draw inspiration from the martyrs’ spiritual courage—to stand firm in the face of adversity, embrace tolerance, and foster a spirit of togetherness across political and cultural divides.

Reinvigorating the NRM with Cultural and Ethical Leadership
Positioning himself as a candidate ready to bring “new energy into the party,” Echodu outlines his vision for the NRM in Eastern Uganda: one grounded in moral clarity, cultural values, and service above self.
He pledges to champion leadership that mirrors the integrity and resolve of Uganda’s martyrs—an inclusive political culture that puts people first and rebuilds public trust through action, not rhetoric.
A Call to Renew Uganda’s Collective Purpose
“As we reflect on the Martyrs’ sacrifice, let us renew our collective purpose as a nation. Let this day ignite in us the courage to stand for what is right, the humility to serve, and the unity to build a better Uganda together,” Mr. Echodu affirmed.
His message transcends partisan lines, offering a timely reminder that Uganda’s future can only be secure if it is anchored in shared values and mutual respect.
