UgandaToday: The Battle for NUP’s Nakawa East MP Flag Heats Up
By Peter Luzinda
Two Strong Contenders Face Off
The National Unity Platform (NUP) is facing one of its most competitive internal races in Nakawa East, where Kibirige Kassim and Waiswa Mufumbiro have emerged as the frontrunners for the party flag. The decision of the NUP vetting committee will play a decisive role in shaping not only the party’s representation but also the political future of the constituency.
Kassim: The Grassroots Candidate
Kibirige Kassim, described as a “true son of the soil,” has deep roots in Nakawa East. Born and raised in Mutungo Zone 4, Kassim has long been active in community leadership, serving as Youth Chairperson and previously contesting for the LC3 councillor seat.
Kassim’s campaign pledges focus on youth empowerment, better healthcare, improved education, and stronger community leadership. His intimate understanding of local issues, coupled with grassroots support, positions him as a formidable candidate appealing directly to Nakawa East residents.
Mufumbiro: The National Figure
In contrast, Waiswa Mufumbiro brings national-level experience to the table. As NUP Deputy Spokesperson, he enjoys high visibility and influence within the party’s structures.
Although a leaked document circulated online suggesting he scored 37 in vetting and 45 on ground performance, NUP has dismissed it as fake. Nevertheless, Mufumbiro’s national profile and political experience remain strong assets that could bolster NUP’s appeal in Nakawa East.
A Tough Decision for NUP
The vetting committee now faces a delicate balancing act:
-
Should the party prioritize Kassim’s strong local grounding and grassroots loyalty?
-
Or should it opt for Mufumbiro’s national stature and wider political experience?
The outcome will reveal whether NUP places greater value on local representation or national visibility in its strategy for 2026.
The Road Ahead
As the elections draw closer, the campaign trail in Nakawa East is expected to intensify. Both candidates are already engaging voters, refining their messages, and showcasing their visions for the constituency.
The final decision will not only determine who carries the NUP flag but also shape the future leadership of Nakawa East—a constituency whose voice will be critical in Uganda’s evolving political landscape.
