The Apata Initiative, named after the Twi word for “shade”, is redefining how Accra responds to extreme urban heat by harnessing youth-led climate innovation. With its focus on cooling, greenery, and sustainability, the initiative is offering not just cover from the blazing sun, but also hope for a resilient, inclusive, and climate-smart future.

Innovative Cooling for Hotter Cities

Backed by Bloomberg Philanthropies through the Youth Climate Action Fund of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the Apata Initiative is reshaping public spaces with innovative cooling sheds crafted from reusable materials. Designed and built by local organisation McKingtorch Africa, these sheds have been strategically installed in heat-prone zones such as schools and markets, offering cyclists and pedestrians vital relief from rising temperatures.

“The first two cooling sheds have been constructed and they represent our commitment to healthier public spaces. Built from reusable materials, they not only provide immediate relief from heat but also showcase how sustainable design can transform our city,” said Roselyn Ntim, Project Lead of the Apata Initiative.

Confronting the Urban Heat Island Effect

Accra’s rapid urbanisation, coupled with loss of tree cover, has intensified the Urban Heat Island effect (UHI). The capital now records significantly higher average temperatures compared to nearby towns like Dodowa and Aburi. Vulnerable groups—especially the elderly, children, and pregnant women—face the harshest impacts, making climate adaptation interventions like Apata’s crucial for public health.

Leadership Endorsement

“This project is a practical solution to tackling extreme heat, one of the biggest challenges facing Accra today. By combining climate innovation with community needs, we make our city more livable and support our long-term goal of sustainable transportation. Partnerships with young people are key to our success, and by collaborating with organisations like Bloomberg Philanthropies and UCLG, we are advancing cities’ climate action in meaningful and lasting ways,” said Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Mayor of Accra.

Towards a Climate-Smart Future

By linking climate action with active mobility, the Apata Initiative is directly contributing to Accra’s Vision 2050, which aims to ensure that 40% of all city trips are made by non-motorised transport. The youth-led project is helping build cleaner air, safer public spaces, and healthier communities—paving the way for a greener, cooler Accra.
