UgandaToday: Ghana Government Launches Cooperative Mining Programme in Bibiani
Bibiani, Ghana | Africa Publicity – The Government has officially rolled out the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at ensuring that mining is conducted responsibly, sustainably, and in a way that directly benefits local communities.
A Commitment to Responsible Mining
Launching the programme in Bibiani, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Buah, reaffirmed Government’s dedication to promoting fair and inclusive mining practices. He emphasised that mining communities “can and should benefit from the mineral deposits in their localities,” underscoring the importance of community participation in resource exploitation.
Role of Large-Scale Mining Companies
A major highlight of rCOMSDEP is the call for large-scale mining companies to release parts of their concessions for cooperative mining. Beyond access to concessions, Hon. Buah urged companies to actively support the initiative by offering training, mentorship, and logistical backing.
This collaborative approach is expected to bridge the gap between large operators and local artisanal miners, ensuring more equitable distribution of benefits from Ghana’s mineral wealth.
Community-Centred Framework
The programme’s framework has been carefully designed to directly empower residents of mining communities. By equipping locals with skills and opportunities, rCOMSDEP aims to reduce illegal mining practices, enhance safety, and create sustainable livelihoods.
Hon. Buah revealed that some companies, including Asante Gold Corporation in Bibiani, have already pledged their support to the initiative. He lauded their commitment, noting that their participation sets a strong example for others in the mining industry to follow.
Looking Ahead
The launch of rCOMSDEP marks a significant step towards community-driven mining development, with the government hopeful that it will foster stronger partnerships between mining companies and host communities, while safeguarding the environment and ensuring long-term socio-economic growth.
