Kitgum, Uganda – The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda has elected Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko as the 7th Bishop of West Buganda Diocese. The announcement was made during a sitting at Acaka Hotel in Kitgum, immediately following the 48th commemoration of Janani Luwum Day.

The election of Rev. Canon Nsereko comes as a momentous decision, bringing new leadership to the diocese. His consecration and enthronement are scheduled to take place on March 30, 2025, at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kako, Masaka.

Who is Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko?

Rev. Canon Gaster Nsereko a seasoned clergyman with vast experience in pastoral ministry, was born on July 05,1965 at bbira Nakuwadde Wakiso district. He was ordained a deacon on December 09 1989 at St. Andrew’s Cathedral Namukozi Mityana district. He was made a Canon on January 17, 2010 at St. Pau’s cathedral Kako West Buganda diocese. He is married to Sarah Nsereko and God has blessed the coupe with three children.

He holds a Bachelor of Divinity from Uganda Christian University, a Diploma in Primary Education from the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo. Prior to his elevation as a bishop, he has been serving as the  Archdeacon of Kakoma Archdeaconry and Vicar of Kakoma church of Uganda. He previously served as a Provost of St. Paul’s Cathedral Kako. He has extensively engaged himself in various  church administration activities, and community leadership. He has served the Church of Uganda diligently in various capacities, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to faith, evangelism, and social transformation.His leadership has been instrumental in fostering spiritual growth, youth empowerment, and social development within the communities he has served.

Beyond his clerical work, Rev. Canon Nsereko is known for his advocacy for education and poverty alleviation, championing programs that support vulnerable groups in society.

The Bishop-Elect’s Vision

Following his election, Rev. Canon Nsereko expressed his gratitude and commitment to serving the people of West Buganda Diocese. He emphasized his vision of strengthening discipleship, promoting unity, and advancing socio-economic development within the diocese.

“I am humbled by this calling to serve as Bishop. With God’s guidance, I pledge to continue fostering faith, love, and development for the glory of God and the betterment of our people,” he stated.
