Uganda Today Edition:
Eulogy for the Late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya – A Reflection by Uganda Law Society President, Isaac Ssemakadde
10th January 2025
The Uganda Law Society joins the nation in mourning the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. Hon. Ssegirinya was not just a legislator; he was a fervent activist and a relentless champion for a more just Uganda—one where the law serves as a shield of justice rather than a tool of oppression.
Hon. Ssegirinya’s life was marked by his deep commitment to the marginalized and his unyielding advocacy for equality and fairness. Despite health challenges and legal battles that exposed glaring shortcomings in our justice system, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice. His resilience and courage allowed him to maintain his seat in Parliament, even amidst adversity.
The dark underbelly of our justice system, laid bare through Hon. Ssegirinya’s struggles, serves as a stark reminder of the grave consequences of allowing politics to distort legal processes. When the rule of law is compromised, it erodes legal excellence, weakens institutions, and leaves the vulnerable susceptible to abuse.
As we reflect on Hon. Ssegirinya’s life, we must commit ourselves to restoring faith in our legal institutions. The Uganda Law Society pledges to uphold the law impartially, protect individual rights, and resist bias and oppression. This is the most fitting way to honor Hon. Ssegirinya’s legacy.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Anita Among, for her compassion and leadership during this difficult time. As a nation, let us take inspiration from Hon. Ssegirinya’s unwavering dedication to justice and work tirelessly to build a society where fairness and equity prevail.
Rest in power, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya. Your fight for justice will not be in vain.
Isaac K. Ssemakadde
President Uganda Law Society
