Uganda Today Edition: Eron Kiiza Arrested at Makindye Military Court, Martha Karua Granted Practicing License

Makindye, Kampala – January 7, 2024 In a dramatic turn of events at Makindye Military Court today, Eron Kiiza, a prominent lawyer on Dr. Kizza Besigye’s defense team, was abruptly arrested and removed from court on orders from the presiding court chairman. The arrest unfolded during a tense session of the General Court Martial, leaving Besigye’s supporters and legal team stunned and confused.

Kiiza, known for his vocal and unyielding approach in defending Dr. Besigye, was escorted out by military personnel amid a commotion that briefly disrupted proceedings. Following his removal, the court adjourned for 30 minutes to restore order, as emotions ran high among Besigye’s supporters.

This unexpected incident occurred on a day of mixed fortunes for Besigye’s camp. In a significant development, the Uganda Law Council issued a temporary practicing license to Kenyan politician and lawyer Martha Wangari Karua, who has joined Besigye’s defense team. Karua’s initial application for the license had been rejected on various grounds, but her reapplication on December 23, 2024, proved successful, allowing her to represent Besigye in the ongoing trial.

Karua’s presence at the court today was met with optimism by Besigye’s supporters, who viewed her inclusion as a boost to the embattled opposition leader’s defense. Karua, a seasoned legal mind and respected politician, is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the high-profile case.

As the court resumed after the adjournment, Besigye’s legal team remained visibly shaken by the arrest of Kiiza, which they described as a violation of their client’s right to fair representation. “This is an attack on justice and the rule of law,” one of Besigye’s lawyers remarked, adding that they would seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding Kiiza’s detention.

Observers have noted that the incident underscores the high-stakes nature of the trial, which has drawn significant attention both locally and internationally. The ongoing proceedings continue to test Uganda’s legal and political landscape, with Dr. Besigye’s team vowing to remain resolute in their pursuit of justice.

The military court has yet to provide a statement on the reasons for Kiiza’s arrest, fueling speculation about the motives behind this sudden move. As tensions rise, all eyes remain on the court as it handles one of the most politically charged cases in recent Ugandan
