Uganda Today: EC Postpones SIG Non-unionised Elections To August 18
Kampala | Uganda Today | August 2, 2025 —
The Electoral Commission of Uganda has officially announced the postponement of elections for non-unionised workers’ delegates, originally scheduled for August 5, to Monday, August 18, 2025. The shift in the electoral calendar aims to allow sufficient time for finalizing logistical preparations in consultation with the Ministry responsible for workers.
In a statement released by Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, the Sub-County/Division and Town Council-level conferences will now take place on the new date across the country. The process is intended to elect ten delegates from each local jurisdiction, at least three of whom must be women, to the respective City or District conferences.
Electoral Roadmap Adjusted
The electoral schedule will now proceed as follows:
Sub-County/City Division Conferences: Monday, August 18, 2025
City/District Delegates Conferences: Friday, August 22, 2025
Regional Conferences: Monday, August 25, 2025
Each regional conference—organized in the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Western regions—will elect ten non-unionised delegates to join unionised workers in forming the Electoral College for the eventual election of Members of Parliament representing workers.
Eligibility and Voting Process
To participate in the conferences, an individual must:
* Be a Ugandan citizen aged 18 or above,
* Be a registered voter,
* Be gainfully employed and possess a valid employment ID,
* Not be affiliated with any labour union.
Voting will be conducted by lining up behind preferred candidates, beginning with the election of the three mandatory female delegates. Nominations will be oral, supported by a proposer and two seconders. The elected delegates will not hold specific offices (e.g., Chairperson or Secretary) but will represent their jurisdictions at the next levels.
Call for Mass Participation
Justice Byabakama urged all eligible non-unionised workers to actively engage in this democratic process.
“The Electoral Commission calls on all eligible workers to turn up in big numbers and exercise their constitutional right to elect their leaders,” the statement emphasized.
All Regional Election Officers, Returning Officers, and Community Development Officers have been instructed to disseminate this updated information to relevant stakeholders across the country.
