Uganda Today Edition: Chaos Mars Kawempe North By-Election Nomination as JAT Targets NUP’s Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola
Kampala – February 26, 2025
Day one of nominations for the Kawempe North by-election was marred by chaos as heavily armed Joint Anti-Terrorism (JAT) security operatives stormed the Electoral Commission (EC) offices, firing sporadic gunshots in an attempt to arrest National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Elias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola.
Moments after completing his nomination, Nalukoola was surrounded by JAT officers who forcefully attempted to detain him, prompting panic among his supporters. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of brutality as security personnel aggressively manhandled the politician before he was whisked away under unclear circumstances. However, he was later released from Kawempe Police Station without any charge preferred against him.
Nalukoola Speaks Out
Following the incident, a defiant Nalukoola condemned the security forces and accused the Electoral Commission of turning a blind eye to the harassment of opposition candidates.
“Several attempts were made in recent days to thwart our nomination, but we were alert. Today, I was shamelessly humiliated and mistreated by JAT. The EC seems not concerned about this brutality against candidates. Shame!” Nalukoola declared.
Despite the hostility, he reassured his supporters that his nomination had been secured.
“Hello Kawempe North, we are successfully nominated. Let’s do it!” he said, rallying his supporters ahead of the campaign period.
Growing Tensions in the By-Election
The chaotic nomination day raises fresh concerns over the fairness of the upcoming by-election. Opposition figures have long accused security forces of targeting NUP candidates to suppress political competition.
As the race for Kawempe North heats up, all eyes are now on the EC and security forces, with questions mounting over whether they will ensure a free and fair electoral process.
