Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious higher education institution, is celebrating its 75th graduation ceremony, a momentous event spanning five days from January 13th to January 17th, 2025. Since its inception in 1922 with a modest enrollment of 14 male students, the university has grown into a cornerstone of education and innovation, shaping Uganda’s intellectual landscape.
Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, the 8th Chancellor of Makerere University, officiated the grand event. Addressing the jubilant graduands, Dr. Kiyonga urged them to harness their acquired skills to create jobs and embrace self-employment, whether individually or collaboratively. He constituted the assembly of 13,688 graduands, who received qualifications ranging from bachelor’s and master’s degrees to PhDs and doctorates.
Investment in Research and Innovation
Highlighting the government’s commitment to advancing education and innovation, Dr. Kiyonga revealed that a significant investment of UGX 30 billion had been injected into research and innovation initiatives at the university. He emphasized the importance of adopting a progressive work ethic and remaining receptive to new ideas, traits he deemed vital for success in a dynamic global landscape.
