CBS to Host LoP Joel Ssenyonyi

In what appears to be a broader strategy to rebalance political discussions, the station is also expected to introduce a permanent NUP voice on its Saturday Parliament Yaffe program. Either Alex Waisswa Mufumbiro or David Lewis Rubongoya, both vocal NUP figures, will reportedly be included as regular panelists.

Katikkiro Chrles Peter Mayiga sanctioned rehosting of LOP Joel Ssenyonyi on the mighty CBS FM. CBS FM  is Buganda Kingdom mouth piece and its influence is not underestimated in the whole of Uganda

Kampala – After mounting pressure from various political circles, Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga has reportedly directed the top management of CBS FM to allow the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, to appear on one of its flagship political talk shows.

According to inside sources who spoke to Uganda Today, Meddie Nsereko, a veteran political talk show host at CBS, confirmed that his bosses have finally given him the green light to bring Ssenyonyi on air. The LoP is now set to appear as a special guest on the Kiriza oba Gaana program, which airs on 89.2 FM from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM every weekday.

This move is seen as a significant shift in CBS’s programming, given the station’s historical reluctance to host high-ranking members of the National Unity Platform (NUP), the main opposition party led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine.

Balancing the Political Debate

In what appears to be a broader strategy to rebalance political discussions, the station is also expected to introduce a permanent NUP voice on its Saturday Parliament Yaffe program. Either Alex Waisswa Mufumbiro or David Lewis Rubongoya, both vocal NUP figures, will reportedly be included as regular panelists. Their presence is aimed at countering the sharp criticisms often leveled against Kyagulanyi and his supporters by existing panelists such as Hon. Abed Bwanika. While Imam Kasozi and Yusuf Nsibambi often air views of the opposition FDC, Kasule Ssebunya leans towards government.

CBS’s decision comes at a time when Buganda’s political dynamics are increasingly under scrutiny, with tensions between different opposition factions playing out in media spaces. Insiders suggest that Mayiga’s intervention was prompted by growing concerns over CBS’s perceived bias and the station’s declining influence among NUP supporters in Buganda.

Greater Masaka Reporters Under Scrutiny

Further complicating matters, CBS reporters in the Greater Masaka region, particularly Tomusange Kayinja, have reportedly been accused of openly favoring Mathias Mpuuga, the former LoP and current NUP Commissioner of Parliament. This alleged partisanship is said to have contributed to discontent among listeners and threatened CBS’s standing as a neutral Buganda-based media outlet.

Sources indicate that the pressure on CBS to revise its programming came from both within the station and external political forces who saw the media house’s stance as alienating a section of its audience.

Implications for Buganda Politics

The decision to allow Ssenyonyi and other NUP figures more airtime signals a potential shift in CBS’s approach to political programming. It also reflects the ongoing realignment within Buganda’s political landscape, where different factions within the opposition are seeking dominance.

With this latest move, CBS aims to reassert itself as a key platform for balanced political discourse while addressing concerns of impartiality among its listeners. As the 2026 elections approach, Buganda remains a critical battleground, and the media’s role in shaping public opinion cannot be understated.

Joel Ssenyonyi’s much-anticipated appearance on Kiriza oba Gaana is expected to attract a wide listenership, as political enthusiasts keenly observe how the discussion unfolds. Whether this will mark a permanent shift in CBS’s political stance or just a temporary adjustment remains to be seen.
