Uganda Today Edition: Torment and Incarceration: Hajj Zubair Wamala’s Ordeal in Kiti -AJjokolera Nansana
Hajj Zubair Wamala, a resident of Kiti- A in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, is living a nightmare brought upon him by Nathan Byanyima, the Member of Parliament for Bukanga North, Isingiro District. Wamala, a beneficiary of the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, had invested in a poultry project at his home. However, this seemingly innocent endeavor has resulted in his torment and imprisonment, raising serious concerns about the abuse of power by influential individuals.
A Poultry Project Turns Contentious
Hajj Wamala started his poultry project with funds from the PDM initiative, a government program aimed at uplifting the livelihoods of Ugandans. His project, located in close proximity to Byanyima’s residence, quickly became the subject of controversy. Byanyima claims that the noise from Wamala’s chickens disturbs his family, particularly his half-caste child, who he alleges is allergic to bird noises.
Instead of resolving the matter amicably, Byanyima reportedly used his influence to escalate the situation. Hajj Wamala was dragged to the Makindye Wildlife Court on charges related to his poultry project, leading to his imprisonment.
Mysterious Release and Continued Court Battles
Though the details surrounding Wamala’s release from prison remain unclear, sources suggest that he was granted bail. However, his ordeal is far from over, as he continues to be required to appear in court on scheduled dates. The case has left Wamala, an elderly man, emotionally and financially drained, casting a shadow over his once-promising poultry project.
Abuse of Power and Calls for Action
The treatment of Hajj Wamala has sparked outrage among residents and rights activists, who are calling for immediate intervention. The abuse of power by Byanyima, leveraging his position to destabilize Wamala’s livelihood, has raised serious ethical and legal questions.
Leaders from the area, including the Member of Parliament, Hon. Muwada Nkunyingi, and the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), are being urged to investigate Byanyima’s conduct. There is a growing demand for measures to be taken to ensure that Wamala’s peace and project are safeguarded from undue interference.
The Need for Accountability
This case highlights the urgent need for a fair and just system that protects ordinary citizens from the misuse of power by influential individuals. The PDM funds are meant to support grassroots development, and any attempts to derail such initiatives must be condemned in the strongest terms.
It is imperative that leaders and stakeholders in Wakiso District step in to mediate and resolve the issue, ensuring that Hajj Wamala can continue his poultry project without further harassment. Furthermore, there is a need for accountability and transparency in handling such cases to prevent a recurrence of similar abuses.
