UgandaToday: 🏆 Buganda Kingdom Institutions Sports Gala 2025 Kicks Off in High Gear
Royal Sportsmanship at Its Best
The much-anticipated Buganda Kingdom Institutions Sports Gala 2025 kicked off in grandeur at the Lubiri Grounds, bringing together more than 20 Buganda Kingdom institutions in a show of unity, energy, and sporting spirit. This year’s edition is proudly organized by Muteesa I Royal University (MRU) — an institution long committed to advancing both the intellectual and physical vitality of the Kabaka’s people. Its theme is: Ommanyi- (Do you know me comrade in in His Majesty Kabaka’s service?Â

The first leg of the gala was presided over by Oweekitiibwa Cotilda Nakate, who represented Oweekitiibwa Sserwanga, the Kabaka’s Minister for Youth and Sports. In her remarks, Oweekitiibwa Nakate underscored the centrality of sports in maintaining a healthy and productive Kingdom workforce, echoing the Kabaka’s enduring message on wellness and discipline.
BBS Terefayina Takes the Early Bird Trophy
Among the earliest and most enthusiastic participants was BBS Terefayina, which received special recognition for punctuality after arriving at Lubiri Grounds as early as 6:45 a.m. Their spirited participation set the tone for the day, earning them what was dubbed the “Early Bird Trophy” — a symbol of commitment and energy in service to the Kabaka’s call for collective participation.

The gala featured a wide range of competitive disciplines, from traditional board games such as Ludo and Omweeso to modern field sports including soccer, volleyball, and netball, among others. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and excitement, with cheering crowds and colorful displays of institutional pride.
Promoting Health and Unity in the Kingdom Workforce
Speaking during the event, Oweekitiibwa Cotilda Nakate highlighted the importance of sports and physical fitness as a key pillar in building a productive Kingdom workforce.
“The Kabaka envisions a Buganda where every worker is healthy, strong, and productive. Sports is not merely for recreation, but for sustaining the body and spirit that serve the Kingdom,” she said.
This aligns closely with His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s longstanding campaign for a healthy and vibrant Buganda, a message consistently echoed through initiatives such as the Kabaka Birthday Run, Buganda Health Camps, and other wellness-driven Kingdom programs.
A Kingdom United Through Sport
The gala not only celebrates physical fitness but also strengthens institutional solidarity within the Buganda Kingdom’s administrative and cultural framework. Participating entities range from BBS Terefayina, CBS FM, Muteesa I Royal University, Buganda Land Board, to Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board, Namulondo Investments, Eggwanika Lya Buganda Bbowa Vocational Institute, Majestic Brands, among others — all rallying under the shared banner of Obumu bwa Buganda (unity of Buganda).
The sports activities serve as a reminder that the Kingdom’s strength lies in both mind and body, as emphasized by Kabaka Mutebi’s vision of “Obuganda Obulamu Bwebugagga” — a healthy and prosperous Buganda.
Action Resumes November 22 — Athletics Takes Center Stage
The final leg of the Buganda Institutions Sports Gala 2025 resumes on November 22, 2025, where athletics will take center stage. The day promises thrilling competitions in track and field events, furthering the Kingdom’s agenda of promoting wellness, teamwork, and excellence.
As the sun sets on the first leg, excitement mounts for the grand finale — a celebration not just of sport, but of the enduring unity and vitality of Buganda.
