Uganda Today : Buddu Edges Gomba in Thrilling 2025 Buganda Masaza Cup Opener at Kitovu
Masaka, Uganda – June 22, 2025
The much-anticipated opening match of the 2025 Buganda Masaza Cup lived up to its billing as Buddu clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over traditional rivals Gomba in a tightly contested encounter held at Kitovu Playground in Masaka.
A vibrant crowd of Buganda football enthusiasts filled the stands, with cultural pride and competitive spirit running high as the two Masaza giants rekindled their historic rivalry. The clash marked the official kick-off of this year’s edition of the prestigious tournament, under the patronage of the Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
Despite a goalless first half filled with end-to-end action and solid defensive displays from both sides, it was Buddu that broke the deadlock midway through the second half. Forward Sseruwugge Crispus emerged the hero of the day, latching onto a well-delivered cross and slotting home the decisive goal that sent the Buddu fans into raptures.

Gomba, five-time champions and perennial contenders, pushed for an equaliser in the final minutes but were repeatedly denied by Buddu’s resolute backline and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Gerald Sserunjogi.
Buddu head coach Patrick Luyinda praised his side’s composure and discipline, describing the result as “a morale-boosting statement of intent” for their campaign this year.
“We knew Gomba would be tough, but the boys stuck to the game plan. Crispus took his chance well, and defensively we were very organized,” said Luyinda during the post-match interview.
The win puts Buddu at the summit of Group A, earning them an early advantage in a tournament that continues to grow in prestige and competitiveness each year. This year’s edition features 18 county teams drawn from across the Buganda Kingdom, all vying for glory and the ultimate honour of lifting the Kabaka’s Buganda Masaza Cup.
Gomba coach Charles Ssekyanzi remained optimistic despite the loss.
“It’s only the first game. We have time to regroup and come back stronger. The performance wasn’t bad—we just lacked that final touch,” he said.
The opening ceremony was graced by several dignitaries from the Buganda Kingdom, including the Kingdom’s Sports Minister, Owek. Henry Ssekabembe, who lauded both teams for setting a high standard for the rest of the tournament.
The Buganda Masaza Cup continues to be a key platform for discovering and nurturing grassroots football talent, while also promoting unity and cultural pride across the Kingdom.
The next round of matches is scheduled for the coming weekend, with eyes now on whether Buddu can maintain their momentum—and if Gomba will bounce back.
