Brovad Sands Lodge House Keeper Makes Uganda Proud

Joan Nansubuga Displayed Rare Honesty

On matters to do with money, Uganda has very often got into international news for actions that do not portray the country in positive image. For example In 1998 June 13, at  the John F. Kennedy Airport in New York,  former Kampala mayor of two months, (now late Nasser Ntege Ssebagala, was pulled off a Sabena Airways flight due enroute to Brussels and eventually to Entebbe. Initial reports indicated that he had been arrested in a case involving stolen travelers cheques. Later Ssebagala was found guilty and sentenced to serve a term of imprisonment in US.

However, unlike the former mayor, Joan Nansubuga of Brovad Sands Lodge in Kalangala, displayed a rare degree of honesty when she returned 10,000 USD cash which her guests had inadvertently left in one of the  rooms she kept.

Joan Nansubuga, a house keeper at Brovad Sands Lodge, Kalangala recently found US$ 10,000 left behind by a guest in the room, and returned it. As the saying goes, if you want to be trusted, be honest, Nansubuga lived to this dictum thus in no small measure making not only her employer proud but the whole country Uganda as well.!

Nansubuga, a 26 years old single mother of two lived to the professionalism of her employer by surrendering the money to her management on realising that the guests who had occupied three rooms were already on sail aboard MV Brovad boat to Kampala. Asked about what happened to her on setting sight and opening a wallet that contained that huge amount she had never seen and perhaps will never see again, Nansubuga says “fear engulfed me but i immediately overcame it and also  recalled the doctrine of honesty and transparency  under hospitality industry which i am enjoined to exhibit at all times. Before being offered employment here, my employer emphasized the same to me as well. I immediately notified my supervisor who in turn reported the matter to the General Manager and in turn the guests were notified”. The cash was transferred to Kampala Brovad Sands Lodge office from where the guests retrieved it.
