The lush sports grounds of the Kabaka’s Palace at Lubiri Mengo came alive with colour, laughter, and competitive spirit as BBS Terefayina yesterday June 14, 2025, held its highly anticipated interdepartmental sports day. The event, infused with Buganda cultural pride and youthful energy, saw employees from various departments engage in an exciting mix of traditional and modern games—bringing the media house together in a rare but refreshing celebration of teamwork and community.
The day featured a diverse range of games that included football, the ever-entertaining rope tag, bottle filling contests, egg races, balloon chest bursting, blindfold walking, and 100-metre races for both men and women. Staff from all departments enthusiastically took part, donning vibrant jerseys emblazoned with the names of political aspirants who proudly sponsored their teams.
Politicians Join the Fray Through Jersey Sponsorships
Notably, the event attracted the goodwill of several prominent aspiring politicians who saw the event as a platform to connect with the youth and media community. Among them was Najja Nasif, the dynamic Wakiso District councilor currently vying for the LC5 chairperson seat. He sponsored the Production Department, providing smartly designed jerseys bearing his name. His gesture proved lucky, as the Production team emerged the overall winners of the games.
In second place was the Newsroom Department, whose team was clad in jerseys provided by Kiruluuta Yusuf Nkerettanyi, an ambitious candidate eyeing the Kalungu East parliamentary seat. Their teamwork and energy were palpable throughout the competitions. They were second overall
Musa Kyagulanyi, aspiring to represent Kawempe South in Parliament, extended his support to the Sales Department by sponsoring their uniforms. The Sales team impressed with their coordination and agility, earning them a respectable third place overall.
Sponsors Make It a Day to Remember
Corporate sponsors added flavour to the day. Hariss International, the manufacturers of the popular Riham Sodas, refreshed the crowd with a generous supply of soft drinks that kept spirits high despite the afternoon heat. Zula’s Chicken Wandegeya took charge of the day’s meals, serving up steaming plates of delicious food that had both competitors and spectators lining up for more.
Leadership Presence and Team Spirit
The Administration Department, under the leadership of Managing Director Mr. Patrick Ssembajjo, participated with pride, even though their final position trailed behind. Their presence was symbolic of unity from the top, and Mr. Ssembajjo’s remarks at the event’s close praised staff for their “discipline, participation, and unshakable spirit of obuwereeza obulungi eri Ssaabasajja.”
The Technical Department, though finishing at the bottom, was commended for their effort and resilience. Their involvement completed the circle of representation across BBS Terefayina’s internal ecosystem.
More Than Just Games
Beyond the medals and scores, the interdepartmental sports day served as a powerful reminder of the annual event that puts emphasis on the value of internal cohesion, employee well-being, and cultural identity. By anchoring the event at Lubiri Mengo, the symbolic heart of the Buganda Kingdom, BBS Terefayina not only entertained but reaffirmed its commitment to the values that shape its media philosophy.
As the sun set over Lubiri, with the echoes of cheers still lingering, one thing was certain: BBS Terefayina had successfully turned a simple staff event into a moment of pride, unity, and strategic engagement—with politics, culture, and sport all meeting in celebration.
