Former Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament Anita Annet Among has publicly expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his son, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, following the decision to end restrictions on her movement and halt criminal prosecution against her.
In a statement published on her X account on Wednesday, August 26, Among described the President’s intervention as an act of “parental grace” and thanked him for what she called his decision to grant her mercy.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President @KagutaMuseveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among stated.
Her message came a day after Gen. Muhoozi announced that President Museveni had instructed him to release Among from house arrest and that she would not be prosecuted.
‘Gift of Life and Freedom’
Among’s reference to “life and freedom” marks a striking turn in the political fortunes of a woman who, only months ago, occupied one of Uganda’s most powerful constitutional offices.
She served as Speaker of the 11th Parliament from March 2022 until the transition to the 12th Parliament, having previously served as Deputy Speaker.
According to reports, Among had spent more than 100 days under restricted movement at her residence in Nakasero as security agencies pursued investigations touching on allegations including corruption, abuse of office, illicit enrichment and money laundering. The allegations had not resulted in a criminal trial against her before the President’s reported decision to end the matter.
The decision to release her therefore represents a dramatic reversal from the circumstances that had surrounded her political career in recent months.
Gratitude to the President
At the centre of Among’s statement is her unusually personal description of Museveni’s intervention as “parental grace”.
The former Speaker did not merely describe the decision in legal or political terms. Instead, she framed it as an act of mercy and expressed appreciation to the President for restoring her freedom.
The language is significant in Uganda’s political landscape, where personal relationships, political loyalty and the exercise of presidential authority frequently intersect.
Museveni’s reported decision effectively closes the immediate prospect of criminal proceedings against Among, although questions surrounding the investigations and allegations that preceded the decision are likely to remain subjects of public discussion.
Praise for CDF Muhoozi
Among also singled out Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for praise, thanking the CDF for what she described as his professionalism throughout the period.
“I also extend my gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his professionalism throughout this period,” she said.
The acknowledgement comes against the backdrop of Muhoozi’s public announcement on Tuesday that his father had directed him to lift the restrictions imposed on Among.
“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Muhoozi posted, referring to Among by her initials.
In a subsequent post, he indicated that the State would not prosecute her, saying that she had made mistakes but that Museveni had decided to forgive her.
From Speaker to Bukedea Legislator
With her freedom restored, Among appears determined to shift the focus back to her role as elected representative of Bukedea.
“As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership,” she stated.
The statement signals that, despite the turbulence of recent months, Among intends to remain politically active and continue representing her constituents.
Her political future, however, is likely to attract considerable attention following her withdrawal from the contest for Speaker of the 12th Parliament and the subsequent emergence of former Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth as the leading candidate backed by the ruling establishment. Earlier reports indicated that the Patriotic League of Uganda withdrew its endorsement of Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, with Gen. Muhoozi subsequently endorsing Oboth-Oboth.
A Dramatic Political Reversal
Among’s journey over the past several months has been one of the most closely watched political stories in Uganda.
From presiding over Parliament and occupying a central position within the country’s political establishment, she found herself at the centre of investigations and under security restrictions.
Her release, therefore, does more than restore her personal freedom. It raises broader questions about the nature of political power, presidential discretion, accountability and the relationship between political leadership and the institutions responsible for enforcing the law.
For Among, however, Wednesday’s message was principally one of gratitude.
She thanked God for life and freedom, credited Museveni with extending what she described as parental grace and expressed appreciation to Muhoozi for his professionalism.
What Next for Anita Among?
The immediate question is what role Among will play in Uganda’s political landscape going forward.
Her decision to pledge continued service to Bukedea and support for the country’s “revolutionary leadership” suggests that she does not intend to retreat from public life.
At the same time, the circumstances surrounding her release will continue to invite scrutiny, particularly concerning the allegations that triggered the investigations and the legal basis upon which the proceedings were brought to an end.
The political chapter involving Among’s speakership may have closed, but her political story is clearly not over.
For now, the former Speaker is free, back in the political arena and publicly expressing gratitude to the very leadership whose security and political machinery had, only months earlier, placed her under unprecedented pressure.
