Uganda Today Edition: Abu Mukasa: Uganda’s Unsung Hero in Economic Development Praised by President Museveni
In light of the recent arrests of State House staff over financial impropriety, President Yoweri Museveni has taken a moment to shine a spotlight on one of Uganda’s most influential, yet unsung, economic promoters—Abu Mukasa. The president’s remarks, delivered with clarity and emphasis, hailed Mukasa’s role in driving the country’s economic journey and attracting foreign investments that have fueled national growth.
“It is true that, on my orders, some staff at State House have been arrested for a number of offences for which they are already charged in the appropriate courts. The facts will come out during the trial,” Museveni said. “But why bring in the names of Abu Mukasa, a very active NRM supporter, investor, and mobiliser of more investors from outside to Uganda, and Proscovia Nalweyiso, a veteran female warrior of Uganda’s people’s resistance?”
Museveni underscored Mukasa’s vital role in Uganda’s economic transformation, noting that he has brought billions of dollars in investments to the country. One of the most notable was securing the multi-billion dollar investment from Vittol, a bulk fuel supplier that offered to sell petroleum at record low prices. “At one point, Vittol was offering to sell us a tonne of petroleum at $61.5, diesel at $83, and kerosene at $79.25,” the president revealed.
The president expressed his dismay at those whom he termed “parasites,” both local and foreign, who appear to be working to tarnish Mukasa’s reputation. He noted that these individuals have vested interests in keeping Uganda’s economy stunted for their personal gain. “Mukasa’s offense seems to be bringing billions of dollars in investment to Uganda, which threatens those who would like to see the country’s economy remain weak as long as they benefit individually,” he said.
Museveni issued a stern warning to those attempting to sabotage Mukasa and other well-intentioned investors, including Sheikh Maktoum, stressing that Uganda would use the law to protect its economic interests and punish such individuals. “We shall use the law to deal with these parasites,” the president vowed.
Abu Mukasa remains an iconic yet understated figure in Uganda’s ongoing economic journey, and his contributions have undeniably transformed key sectors of the economy. The president’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of integrity and genuine investment in propelling Uganda forward.
