Uganda today Edition: Abim Parish Chief Threatens Suicide Over Non-Payment of Salary and PDM Funds

Abim District, Uganda – In a distressing turn of events, Parish Chief David Okot of Katala Parish in Opopongo sub-county, Abim District, has reportedly threatened to take his own life amid mounting frustration over long overdue salary payments and delays in PDM fund disbursements.

According to information released by a district concerned staff , Okot expressed his deep despair and disillusionment with the district local government. “Am saying bye bye Abim district local government, May God  give me another job where he will be the only God supervising me and directing my footsteps in Jesus name. Am going home after filing up for early retirement because of intimidation, harassment, and unnecessary transfer,” he declared.

A district staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity, shed further light on Okot’s predicament. “Yes, David Okot is one of us. He works in a parish called Katala in Opopongo sub-county, Abim District, and last year he was arrested by the security deputy GISO for failing to submit the list of PDM beneficiaries to GISO’s office. The outreach allowances to him have not been remitted in time. Sometimes, staff stay for almost three months without salaries,” the source revealed.

We hope David Okot’s woes will addressed before he commits the unthinkable

Uganda Today made several attempts to reach Parish Chief David Okot for comment on his alarming announcement; however, all calls went unanswered.

This latest incident adds to a growing list of grievances among district staff, who report persistent delays in salary disbursement and PDM funds, sparking fears of financial instability and workplace harassment. Local authorities have yet to issue an official response regarding the situation.

As the community grapples with these ongoing challenges, questions arise about the management and accountability within Abim District’s local government. The potential loss of a dedicated public servant like Okot underscores the urgent need for reforms to ensure timely payment and proper handling of funds for those serving in public offices.
